Apartment for Filmmakers: An Ethno-Modern Interior
A modern organic dwelling in Noida designed with an ethno-modern aesthetic, where structural elements like curved stone walls become functional art.
The central feature of the apartment is this sculptural staircase, with concrete cantilever steps emerging from a curved random rubble wall, leading up to a skylight.
Another view of the cantilevered staircase, showing how the folded metal upper treads create a lighter, more transparent feel as they ascend.
This perspective highlights the dramatic play of sunlight from the skylight across the textured stone wall and floating concrete steps.
In the bedroom, the stone and brick wall deforms and slopes to create an integrated, rustic seating nook by the window.
This project was inspired by my travels in Rajasthan, where I observed vernacular stone steps built directly into earthen walls, an idea I reinterpreted here in a modern context.

About Apartment for Filmmakers: An Ethno-Modern Interior
The heart of this design is a curved wall of random rubble stone and brick that actually deforms to create seating, turning a structural element into a conversation piece. We paired this with a cantilevered staircase that starts with raw concrete steps emerging from the stone and transitions into folded metal, creating a sculptural focal point that feels more like an installation than a simple stairway.
This project was an exercise in adaptive architectural intervention rather than simple decoration. We stripped back the standard layout to introduce a central, sculptural element: a curved wall crafted from local rubble stone and brick. This is not a static partition but a dynamic structural feature that flows through the apartment, deforming to create integrated seating niches by the window.
Every decision was driven by an iterative design process that focused on creating a modern organic dwelling. We prioritize honest, raw materials over high-gloss finishes. You will see this throughout the space, with cast-in-situ terrazzo flooring, exposed brick, and lime plaster treatments. The staircase serves as the primary object in the room, inspired by vernacular stone steps found in Rajasthan. By cantilevering concrete treads directly from the rubble wall, we maintained a sense of weight and history.
As the stairs ascend, the material shifts to folded metal, reducing visual weight and creating a transparent effect that draws the eye upward to the skylight. This approach ensures the space is not just aesthetically distinct but also functionally rich, optimizing for natural light and cross-ventilation. If you are looking to move beyond cookie-cutter interiors and want a home that feels responsible, artfully constructed, and truly your own, we should look at what your layout can actually handle.
