When the sun goes down, the city changes. I use a single flash setup to turn dark streets and quiet beaches into cinematic scenes that are all about mood and contrast.

A classic example of my night street photography. Using a single flash, we created these harsh shadows and a high-contrast look for a very dramatic male model portrait.

This upward-looking pose, lit by a flash from the side, creates a heroic and cinematic feel. The black and white edit adds to the timeless quality.

A full-body shot that shows the interplay of light and shadow. The subject is perfectly illuminated against the pitch-black background.

A strong, confident crossed-arm pose. The flash highlights the model's physique and creates a powerful silhouette.

A playful, interactive pose with the sunglasses. Even in a dark, dramatic setup, we can capture moments of personality.

A night beach shoot using flash to illuminate the model against the dark sea. The distant city lights add a beautiful bokeh effect.

A close-up portrait where the flash freezes the movement of her hair in the wind, creating a raw and energetic feel.

Using a touch of red light from the side to add a pop of color and a bit of mystery to this nighttime portrait.

A soft, downward glance lit by flash. This pose creates a quiet, contemplative mood amidst the darkness.

A full-body shot that captures a dynamic, high-fashion pose. The flash creates a stark, dramatic shadow on the sand.

About Dramatic Flash & Night Photography

Using a flash at night isn't just about brightness, it's about controlling the atmosphere. I typically stick to a single-flash setup with my Godox V1 to keep things raw and high-contrast, which works best for portraits where you want to stand out from the dark background. It’s a very hands-on process—we’ll move around to find the right angles where city lights or natural surroundings provide depth to the frame.

When everyone else is looking for golden hour, I’m waiting for the street lamps to flicker on. My approach to night photography is simple: keep it raw. I don't use heavy rigs or complex lighting setups because that kills the flow. I keep it portable—my Sony Alpha 7 IV and a single Godox V1 flash.

Why this style works

  • Control: Using a single light source allows me to create deep, moody shadows. It gives the image a cinematic feel that you just don't get with natural light.
  • The Mumbai Backdrop: Whether it’s the back lanes of Bandra or the edge of a quiet beach, the night environment becomes a canvas. We use the distant city lights to create bokeh and depth, while the flash keeps you sharp and isolated.
  • Collaboration: Since we're dealing with lower light, posing can feel a bit more deliberate. I’ll guide you to hold angles that catch the light just right, especially when we’re playing with silhouettes or side-lighting for that extra edge.

If you’re looking for soft, airy, or traditional portraits, this probably isn’t the right vibe for you. But if you want something that feels like a frame from an indie movie, let’s go out and shoot.

I'm Anuj, and honestly, I get a bit obsessive about lighting. I’m a photographer by choice, and night shoots are where I get to really play with shadows and contrast to make your portraits pop.
