One common mistake I see is confusing premium stone with PVC panels. Remember, PVC panels have seams every eight feet, whereas high-quality stone can be bookmatched for a seamless look. Always check the sound and the seams before finalizing your material board—that is the difference between a timeless finish and a plastic look.

I am a fan of blending the old with the new. Take terrazzo, for instance—a material we grew up seeing in chip-flooring, now reintroduced as non-porous, high-strength tiling that resists staining. Similarly, rattan has evolved from purely rustic furniture to sophisticated wall partitions and light fixtures.
Designing for Longevity
Design is not just about what looks good on day one, but what lasts. A common oversight I often point out is the lack of proper skirting boards. When wall moldings are not finished with a proper base, they become prone to damage during daily floor cleaning. Small, technical details like this are why we emphasize 'Good for Construction' drawings—we plan the seams, the joints, and the protection from the start.
My Selection Process
When I curate a material palette, I pull fabrics and stones to compare them in the actual environment they will inhabit. You need to see how upholstery interacts with the dining table and how it looks in both sunlight and evening artificial lighting. If it does not feel right in the moment, it will not feel right in your home.
