About A Study in Materials & Textures
Before a single brick is laid, we spend weeks in our studio mixing samples. We do not rely on digital catalogs for textures. Instead, we bring physical stones, wood grains, and metal finishes to the table to see how they catch light in real time. This tactile process helps us avoid the common mistake of choosing finishes that look great in a brochure but fail under the specific lighting conditions of your home.
Architecture is an exercise in restraint. In our practice, we have found that the most enduring spaces are not those with the most decoration, but those where materials are allowed to speak for themselves. Since 1993, we have focused on a material palette that prioritizes natural sources: stone, marble, walnut wood, and mild steel.
We often handle the material selection process during our design consultations. When we take clients to showrooms for flooring or cladding, we look for inconsistencies in the stone or the grain of the wood. These natural variations are not flaws to be hidden; they are the character of the material.
For a farmhouse project, we might lean toward rustic, textured brick and weathered timber to anchor the structure to its landscape. Conversely, for a city villa, we might pair fluted concrete panels with polished marble to create a sharp, modern contrast. We avoid the urge to force materials into trends that fade. Our goal is to select finishes that will age gracefully, gaining more character with time rather than needing replacement.
Whether we are specifying materials for a high-traffic commercial lobby or a private bedroom, the criteria remain the same: durability, texture, and how the material reacts to natural light throughout the day. By carefully balancing these elements, we create environments that feel calm, coherent, and deeply connected to their surroundings.
