Beyond the stage, I find deep joy in sharing the nuance and philosophy of Kuchipudi. Whether it is an intensive workshop or an interactive lecture-demonstration, I invite you to explore the rich vocabulary and emotional depth of this classical art form.

Performing for students in the open air with the Himalayas in the background was an unforgettable experience. This was during a workshop demonstration for SPIC MACAY in Uttarakhand.

It was a challenge to introduce the nuances of Kuchipudi to school children in Ujjain, but their enthusiasm was infectious. I am seen here teaching them a basic posture.

A moment of joy while conducting a student induction program at Ujjain Engineering College. Sharing the art of Kuchipudi with young minds is always fulfilling.

The joy on the faces of these young students is the reason I love conducting workshops. Here, I am teaching a basic Kuchipudi stance to school children.

Demonstrating a 'hasta mudra' or hand gesture during a workshop. Each gesture has a specific meaning and is a vital part of our dance vocabulary.

This video captures moments from my recent workshop tour with SPIC MACAY in Uttarakhand, where I had the opportunity to interact with and teach hundreds of wonderful children.

Small moments of connection often bring the greatest satisfaction. This video shows the happy faces of children after a Kuchipudi workshop in a local school.

I was honored to give a lecture-demonstration at the Embassy of India in Dublin. My talk focused on identifying elements of the Nāṭyasāstra in the Kuchipudi Aḍugulu system.

Announcing my first Europe tour, which included performances and workshops in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the UK. This video was taken outside the Triskel Arts Centre in Cork.

About Spreading the Art: Workshops & Demonstrations

My approach to these sessions is not just about teaching steps. When I conduct workshops or lecture-demonstrations, I focus on the Nāṭyasāstra theory and the specific Aḍugulu system of my Guru, Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam. Whether we are in a university hall or a community space, my goal is to strip away the distance between the audience and the art, helping you experience the emotional depth of Abhinaya firsthand.

Bridging Tradition and Understanding

I believe that classical dance is a conversation, not just a spectacle. My workshops are designed for everyone, from absolute beginners who have never seen a mudra, to serious students looking to deepen their grasp of the Vempati Chinna Satyam style.

What My Workshops Cover

During our 2-day intensive modules (typically 6-8 hours total), we break down the complexities of Kuchipudi into manageable parts. We focus on:

  • Abhinaya (Expression): Understanding how to convey emotion and story through eyes and facial nuances.
  • Theory & Philosophy: Learning the historical context of the Nāṭyasāstra and identifying its elements in daily practice.
  • Technical Foundations: Correcting posture, refining the Aḍugulu footwork system, and understanding the rhythm (Talam).

Who These Are For

I have had the privilege of conducting these sessions in varied settings, from the rural schools of Uttarakhand through SPIC MACAY to the halls of the Embassy of India in Dublin. I enjoy working with diverse groups:

  • University & School Students: Introductions to Indian classical dance aimed at sparking a lifelong interest.
  • Art Connoisseurs: Deep-dive lecture-demonstrations on the history and aesthetics of the Kuchipudi tradition.
  • Serious Practitioners: Advanced training on specific compositions or theory that requires focused attention.

Accessibility

Geography should not be a barrier to learning. For those not in Bengaluru, I offer hybrid workshop options via Zoom. All workshop participants receive access to digital audio tracks for practice, and intensive modules conclude with a certification from the KimAham School of Dance.

I am Avijit Das, and my life in Kuchipudi is rooted in the lineage of my Guru, Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam. I believe dance is a conversation, not just a performance, and my greatest satisfaction comes from seeing that spark of understanding in a student’s eyes during a workshop.
