Mohd Amjad Khan: The Tabla Artist in Focus
I believe music is simple—it exists to bring joy. Here is a look at the rhythm, the tradition, and the intense focus that go into every performance I share.

A relaxed moment during a performance in an intimate setting. The smile captures the joy I feel when the music connects with the audience.

An artistic, blue-tinted photograph from a performance at 'The Submarine'. This captures the dynamic motion of my hands on the tabla during an energetic piece.
About The Artist in Focus
When you see me on stage, the intensity you notice isn't just about technique. It is the search for 'sam'—that precise moment of arrival in a composition where the rhythm, the melody, and the audience finally click together. Whether I am playing a traditional Ajrara Gharana solo or jamming with a fusion band, that specific moment of connection is the only true metric of a successful performance.
My journey with the tabla began at ten, growing up with the sounds of the Kirana Gharana. Today, my practice is a balance of two worlds.
The Tradition of Ajrara
At the core of my solo work lies the Ajrara Gharana. It requires discipline and a deep understanding of rare compositions like Peshkaar and Rela. When I perform a traditional baithak, the goal is not to fill the room with noise, but to draw the audience into the conversation between the tabla and the Lehra. This is why I always ensure a professional Lehra player accompanies me for solos—keeping the time cycle steady is non-negotiable.
Rhythm in Fusion
Beyond the classical stage, I love the freedom of fusion. As part of my band, Mausiqaar, I bring the same technical rigour to western genres, Sufi arrangements, and jazz. Whether it is a corporate event or a festival, the energy is different, but the intent remains the same. I treat every stage as a space to honor the legends who came before me.
Planning Your Event
If you are considering booking a performance, consider the environment. For intimate house concerts, I recommend a traditional floor setup to capture the acoustics of the instrument. For larger venues, I will coordinate with your sound team to ensure my microphones are placed to capture the nuances of the wood and skin. I am based in Delhi NCR but am accustomed to traveling for performances across India.
Mohd Amjad Khan
I am Mohd Amjad Khan. My life has been defined by the sounds of the tabla since I first saw Ustad Zakir Hussain on TV as a child. I carry the weight and the joy of the Kirana and Ajrara lineages in every performance, whether it is a quiet baithak or a high-energy fusion stage.
