About The Blue Hour
This isn't about perfectly lit studio portraits. Shooting in the blue hour means working with ambient city lights, deep shadows, and natural color grading, which requires a specific approach to timing. Because this light fades in a matter of minutes, our session relies on precise planning—we’ll need to coordinate our start time exactly around dusk to catch that perfect, contemplative window of twilight.
Why the Blue Hour?
The blue hour is that fleeting transition when the sun has dropped below the horizon, but the sky is still glowing with a deep, moody blue. In Mumbai, this is the time when the chaos of the day starts to settle into the hum of the night. It is my favorite time to shoot because the lighting is soft, even, and inherently cinematic.
The Approach
Unlike traditional daylight shoots, we won't be using artificial flashes or bright reflectors. We rely on the ambient glow of the city—streetlights, window reflections, and the last remnants of daylight. This creates a grainy, atmospheric aesthetic that feels like a still from a movie. Whether we are at Marine Drive, near the docks, or in the narrow lanes of South Bombay, the goal is to make the city’s light work for your portrait.
What to Expect
- Planning is Key: Since we are chasing a narrow window of 30 to 45 minutes, we will scout our location beforehand so we are ready to move as soon as the light hits that deep blue shade.
- Moody, Raw Results: Expect high-contrast images with teal shadows and warm highlights. These are not 'smile-for-the-camera' photos; they are quiet, observational shots that focus on mood and emotion.
- Location Flexibility: From the jagged coastline of Bandra to the architecture of the BMC building, I know specific spots in Mumbai that catch the light best during this time.
