Black & White Photography in Mumbai
Stripping away the color to find the city's pulse. Here are my raw, monochromatic moments where shadow and light tell the real story.
A dramatic black and white shot of a man holding an umbrella against the wind at Marine Drive, as waves crash against the tetrapods. The monochrome treatment enhances the raw power of the sea and the drama of the moment.
A group of people stands on the sea wall, bracing against a massive wave crashing over them. In black and white, the texture of the water and the raw energy of the scene are intensified, creating a powerful and timeless image.
A vertical video titled "BOMBAY in black & white." This montage strips the city down to its essential forms, showing how light and shadow play across its landscapes, from the sea to the skyline, creating a classic, cinematic feel.
About Black & White Frames
When I strip away the color, I am looking for the texture of the city and the raw lines of a face. For these sessions, I focus on heavy contrast to create drama, so we avoid direct harsh sunlight and prefer the moody light of overcast days or the golden hour transition. This aesthetic works best if you are comfortable with an unposed, slightly cinematic look rather than a traditional studio setup.
Sometimes, color is just noise. By removing it, we stop looking at the background and start looking at the subject. My approach to monochrome is not about simply hitting a filter button. I shoot with the intent of black and white from the very start, constantly watching how light hits a surface or how a shadow wraps around a face.
We use Mumbai's architecture and street life to our advantage. Think of the deep, dark shadows in the alleyways of Fort, or the stark, high-contrast light hitting the tetrapods at Marine Drive. These environments naturally lend themselves to drama.
If you are planning a session, I suggest wearing solid textures rather than busy patterns. A leather jacket, a linen shirt, or even a plain saree catches the light beautifully in monochrome, helping me emphasize the form and emotion of the shot. My gear, primarily my Sony Alpha, is calibrated to capture that dynamic range, ensuring we get deep blacks and rich highlights that digital color often misses.
This style is perfect for those who want a classic, timeless feel to their images. Whether we are shooting a solo portrait to capture a contemplative mood or a candid street story, the goal remains the same. We strip away the distractions and find the soul of the moment. We move away from the noise of the city and into a space that feels quiet, cinematic, and entirely yours.
