The sea has a rhythm all its own. These aren't just photos of boats; they are quiet, raw stories from the harbor that keep Mumbai moving.

A lone fisherman in his boat against the hazy backdrop of the Mumbai skyline. This video, titled "BOATS OF BOMBAY," sets the theme by capturing the solitary nature of a fisherman's work against the massive city.

Two fishermen work together in their small boat, surrounded by a harbor full of other vessels at sunset. The warm light and calm water create a serene and picturesque scene of the fishing community.

An overhead shot of a fisherman casting his net in a turquoise-colored boat. This perspective provides a clear and beautiful view of the skill and daily labor involved in fishing.

A top-down view of a fisherman arranging his bright green net inside his boat. The vibrant color of the net and the focused action of the fisherman make for a compelling and detailed shot.

Two people row a small boat on calm blue waters, with the golden dome of the Global Vipassana Pagoda in the distance. This frame captures a moment of peace and spirituality on the water.

About Boats of Bombay

This specific look relies on catching the light just as the sun hits the harbor. I prefer shooting during the golden hour when the water turns into a mirror, making the boats look like they are suspended in time. If you are planning a shoot here, we will need to coordinate around the tide charts to get the composition right—it makes all the difference between a simple snapshot and a frame that tells a story.

The harbor isn't a studio. It is messy, loud, and unpredictable, which is exactly why I love it. When we head out for a session in this cluster, we aren't chasing perfect smiles. We are chasing the texture of the sea, the reflection of the Koliwada boats, and that specific, moody light that hits the water just before the sun dips below the skyline.

Why this aesthetic works

My 'Cinematic Storytelling Session' is designed for this kind of environment. I use a distinct color grade for these images—deep teal in the shadows to mimic the harbor water and warm, soft highlights to capture the fleeting sun. It’s about creating an atmosphere rather than just recording a visual.

Logistics & Planning

  • The Tide & Time: The harbor transforms with the tide. I check the schedules before we confirm a date so we get the best possible depth and backdrop.
  • The Approach: These sessions are semi-posed. I will direct you, but the environment does half the work. We use real props like the traditional wooden boats (Kaali-Peeli taxis of the sea) to ground the session in the city's reality.
  • The Gear: I shoot these with my Sony Alpha setup, relying on prime lenses to get that cinematic depth of field that makes the water feel endless.

If you want images that feel like stills from a film set in a coastal city, let’s talk. We aren't making postcards; we are documenting a moment.

I’m Shivam. For me, Mumbai isn't just a place—it's a feeling in motion. I’ve spent countless hours by the harbor, not just to photograph the boats, but to understand the rhythm of the people who call the sea their home.
