From the rhythmic rumble of local trains to the nostalgic charm of kaali-peeli taxis, I document the city's pulse through my lens.

A classic Kaali-Peeli taxi drives past the magnificent Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. This single frame perfectly unites two of Mumbai's most iconic symbols of transport and architecture.

A video capturing various "Local Stories" from the Mumbai train, from a boy looking out the window to a view of the passing train cars. It’s a tribute to the journeys and the dreamers on the city's lifeline.

A man sleeps on a bench at a railway platform as a local train passes by. This poignant scene contrasts a moment of personal rest with the relentless movement of the city's transport system.

A flower vendor sits with his wares on the floor of a moving local train. This clip tells a story of hard work and the diverse lives that depend on the city's railway network to make a living.

A lone figure walks along a dark, rain-slicked railway platform at night. The atmospheric lighting and silhouette create a moody, cinematic scene that feels straight out of a film noir.

A crowd of commuters moves along a busy platform and up a staircase. This shot captures the sheer volume of people and the organized chaos that defines the Mumbai local train experience.

A mother and daughter sit on the floor of a train compartment, sharing a quiet moment on their phone. It's an intimate slice of life, showing how personal stories unfold amidst the public space of the train.

A close-up on the steering wheel of a vintage car. This detail-oriented shot evokes a strong sense of nostalgia and classic style, a throwback to a different era of Mumbai's streets.

About Mumbai's Lifeline: Trains & Taxis

I don't look for perfect symmetry when shooting these. I wait for the way the afternoon light hits a train window or how a kaali-peeli taxi contrasts with the city's colonial architecture. These aren't staged photos; they are collaborative explorations where we catch the city's cinematic pulse as it moves.

My approach to the 'Lifeline' series is built on observation. I don't use flash or artificial setups. Instead, I rely on natural light and the rhythm of the commute to tell a story. Whether it is the frantic energy of a platform during rush hour or the quiet, moody silence of an empty taxi, the goal is to make the subject feel part of the city's fabric rather than an outsider looking in.

Why this series matters

These symbols represent the backbone of Mumbai life. When we shoot together, we aren't just taking portraits; we are capturing a specific period in the city's history. We can focus on the nostalgic, vintage feel of the kaali-peeli taxis parked near historic landmarks like Horniman Circle, or we can embrace the modern, chaotic energy of the local trains.

The process

We usually plan these sessions during the golden hour or blue hour to ensure the best color grading. I work with Sony mirrorless gear to maintain that raw, cinematic quality without being intrusive. Because these locations are public and often crowded, I specialize in finding those small, quiet corners where we can create frames that feel like stills from a film. If you have a specific route in mind—perhaps a favorite station or a route where the taxis look best—I am happy to build the session around that.
