Understand anatomy, expression, and movement through hands-on sketching sessions led by an NID alumnus.

A great finish to our weekend figure drawing class. The students are standing proudly in front of their completed artworks, showing the variety of poses and styles they explored.

Our students showing their initial gesture drawings from a figure drawing session. We start with these quick sketches to learn how to capture the movement and essence of the human form.

A behind-the-scenes look at a live sketching session in our studio. I am demonstrating how to create a quick figure drawing with bold ink lines, focusing on capturing the pose and energy of the model.

This image shows the process of learning to draw from a reference. On the right is the reference photo of Durga, and on the left is a student's pencil sketch, capturing the facial features and ornaments.

A student working on a watercolor portrait. She is using both a color and a black-and-white photo reference to better understand the planes of the face and the distribution of light and shadow.

A junior batch student showcasing her diverse work. She holds a colorful painting of the goddess Durga alongside her exercises in negative space, demonstrating a range of skills.

This is a quick live sketch I created using colored pencils and ink. These rapid studies are excellent practice for capturing a likeness and mood in a short amount of time.

Another angle from our live sketching session. This shows how I observe the model from a distance to correctly capture proportions before starting the drawing.

Continuing the live demonstration, I am refining the figure's form and adding details to the sketch. This process helps students see how a drawing is built up from simple lines to a more complete figure.

A quick portrait study done with soft pastels. This medium is great for blending colors and capturing the soft transitions of light on the human face.

About Figure Drawing & Portraiture

At our studio in Sector 37, we don't just teach you how to draw a person; we teach you how to see. You will spend your sessions working from live models and professional references, learning to translate complex anatomical structures into confident lines. This hands-on process is exactly how I prepared for NID, and it is the same approach we use to help you build your own visual vocabulary.

Whether you are prepping for design school or just want to capture a face correctly, understanding the human form is where everything begins. My approach to figure drawing and portraiture is rooted in direct observation rather than rote memorization.

The Process

We break down the human body into basic geometric forms first. Once you grasp the proportion and skeletal alignment, we move to the fluid energy of gesture drawing and the subtle shifts of light on a face. You will see me do live demos in charcoal and watercolor so you understand the pressure, the flow, and the decision-making process behind every mark on the page.

For Entrance Exams

If you are here for NID, NIFT, or B.Arch entrance prep, this section is crucial. Examiners look for a sense of proportion and the ability to sketch quickly under pressure. We practice timed gesture studies to build that speed and confidence. You need to show that you can capture the essence of a pose in minutes, not hours.

The Studio Environment

Our Noida studio is a space for serious practice, but we keep it low-pressure. Small batches mean I can sit with you, look at your sketches, and point out exactly where your shading needs depth or your anatomy is off. You get real, actionable feedback that you can use on your next page. No fluff, just practical guidance for artists at any level.
