Experience the drama of the Great Migration with hands-on coaching on the savanna. My tours focus on storytelling through your lens, prioritizing wide-angle perspectives and the golden light that defines the Masai Mara.

The Lion King surveying his kingdom in the Masai Mara. Using a low angle and a wide lens allows us to place this magnificent male against a dramatic sky, emphasizing his power and the vastness of his territory.

The Topi Plains pride, one of the largest in the Masai Mara, rests as the sun sets. A wide-angle view like this captures the social dynamics of the pride and the beauty of the savanna at dusk.

A powerful male lion from the Topi Plains pride stands against a stormy sky. The dramatic weather adds to the mood, creating a powerful environmental portrait.

A lion and lioness, a courtship pair, walk down a track in the beautiful golden light of early morning. These are the romantic, story-filled moments we seek to capture on safari.

A stunning male lion caught in the warm, golden light of the Masai Mara. Understanding light is critical, and the first and last hours of the day provide the best opportunities for portraits like this.

This is what I mean by "backlight is the best light." This male lion is perfectly rim-lit by the rising sun, creating a beautiful halo effect on his mane and separating him from the background.

The savanna queen on her throne. This lioness uses a small rise in the terrain to scan her territory, and the soft morning light beautifully illuminates her features.

About this collection

On these expeditions, the priority is always positioning. I limit our group size to a maximum of 3 or 4 photographers per vehicle, which means you never have to fight for a clear shooting angle or deal with a blocked view. This gives us the space to set up for the specific golden hour light that makes the Mara famous, ensuring everyone gets that perfect, unhindered frame.

Mastering the Golden Hour

Wildlife photography in the Masai Mara is about more than just finding animals. It is about understanding how to use the light to tell a story. My mantra is simple: backlight is the best light. We focus on the first and last hours of the day to capture the rim lighting that separates predators from the background and turns a standard portrait into something evocative.

The Engineering Approach to Wildlife

As an engineer, I treat photography with a methodical mindset. We do not just spray and pray with our shutters. We study the behavior of the pride, watch the wind direction, and anticipate the 'Palat'—that specific moment when a lion or cheetah looks back toward the vehicle. Whether we are photographing the Topi Plains pride or tracking cheetahs on a termite mound, we are looking for the environmental context, not just a close-up headshot.

Why Small Groups Matter

Big groups are the enemy of good photography. By keeping our 4x4 safaris restricted to small numbers, we ensure that every participant has a clear line of sight. We work with specialized drivers who understand the needs of photographers, specifically requesting engine cuts and precise sun alignment. This is the difference between getting the shot and missing it.

What You Will Learn

  • Wide-angle storytelling: Using lenses to show the animal within the vast savanna landscape.
  • Low-light performance: How to expose for the sky during dawn and dusk without losing your subject.
  • Action freezing: Setting your shutter speed to capture the energy of a hunt or the agility of a leopard cub climbing a tree.

Come prepared with your gear, but bring patience. The Mara rewards those who are willing to wait for the light to turn golden.
