Big Cat Wildlife Photography and Field Stories
I capture the phantasmal energy of India's apex predators. My work focuses on tigers and leopards in their natural element, prioritizing the raw drama of the jungle over static portraits.
And from behind the tangle of the summer wilderness, like a ghost, the great cat emerges. It treads softly on the dry carpet of leaves, making its way towards water. In that moment, a flutter of excitement erupts over the wilds of Central India.
A direct gaze from a tiger is an unforgettable experience. As this one emerged from the forest cover, its eyes held a story of power, intelligence, and wildness that is the very essence of the jungle.
A tiger moving through a glade in the soft glow of a wintry evening. This is the perfect Kipling country setup in the heart of Central India. The calm of the dull golden grass and the varying greens of the gnarled forest, with the great striped beast on the move, reminds me of the sheer drama of the Indian wilds.
There is a certain magic to those stripes and those eyes, seen through the tangled branches of the Central Indian jungles. These two sub-adults, resting but alert, represent the future of their kind, a fragile hope nestled in the heart of the forest.
On a peak-summer day, this tiger rises from its afternoon slumber in a waterhole, its rear half glistening in ooze. After a stretch and a wash, it will be ready for action. Such encounters reveal the daily rhythms of survival in the Central Indian wilds.
Ghost of the forest, the ghost who walks, phantom of the jungle. Many superlatives describe the leopard, my favorite feline. This image, a blur of motion and spots, was the result of sheer excitement and a basic digital camera many moons ago, but it captures the phantasmal, fleeting nature of the cat perfectly.
This is classic tiger country. A vast meadow of golden grass borders a stand of Sal trees, the perfect habitat for the striped predator. The landscape itself tells a story of what is needed for these magnificent animals to survive and thrive.
About this collection
My approach to photographing big cats goes beyond the standard, sharp portrait. I often seek the blur, the movement, and the elusive quality of a leopard slipping through the shadows. It is rarely about the perfect shot; it is about capturing the thrill of the encounter and the raw reality of the jungle I have observed over years in the field.
When I head out to the reserves of Central India or the dense corridors of the Western Ghats, I am not merely hunting for a trophy shot. The true magic lies in the waiting—the quiet anticipation as the forest reveals itself. Whether it is a tiger resting in a waterhole during the peak of summer or a leopard moving like a phantom through the undergrowth, I focus on the story.
Most of my work here is rooted in my years of fieldwork. I believe in showing the environment as it is: the gnarled Sal trees, the dry, crunching leaves, and the essential water bodies that dictate where these great cats survive.
When you view these images, you are looking at moments born from patience. If you are looking for wildlife photography that captures the wild soul of the forest, or if you need professional nature storytelling for a publication, I am here to share that experience. I do not believe in editing out the grit of the forest; the debris, the harsh light, and the raw texture of the wild are all part of the narrative I aim to tell.
