Public Art and Civic Murals by Vritti Kotian
I turn gray city walls into vibrant stories. From metro stations to public squares, I love bringing art directly to the people, creating spaces that feel alive.
A proud moment, being felicitated by Mumbai Metro for winning second prize in the Majhi Metro Art competition. This award gave me the opportunity to paint an entire station.
Me standing in front of my finished mural at a metro station. This month-long project brought artists together and connected with thousands of silent art lovers passing by.
And just like that, my mural made way for a fast-food ad. This is the bittersweet reality of public art. This piece, featuring an astronaut and a surreal landscape, had a short but vibrant life at the WEH metro station.
A video tour of my finished murals at the Mumbai Metro station. Seeing my art in such a public space, as part of the city I was born and raised in, was a dream come true.
A playful shot of me in front of my surreal underwater-themed mural at the metro station. I hoped to bring out the curious child in every commuter.
Another view of the WEH metro station mural before it was painted over. The giant octopus tentacle and alien landscape were a blast to create.
A final look at the full WEH metro station mural. You lived a short, vibrant life and made many people smile.
A close-up of one of my metro murals, now partially covered by a PhonePe QR code sticker. The life of a public artist!
Me looking at another one of my murals in the metro station, a surreal piece featuring a train and a pink moon.
A mood board I created for a project, inspired by vintage Indian matchbox art. This shows a bit of my design process for public art.
About Public Art & Civic Projects
Public art requires more than just paint; it needs navigation through city regulations, community engagement, and weather-proofing for high-traffic zones. When I take on a civic project, I manage the surface preparation and apply UV-resistant protective sealants so the mural remains vibrant even in India's monsoon-drenched streets.
Public art is where my street art hands meet the city's pulse. It is not just about painting a wall; it is about creating a landmark that belongs to everyone. When I work on civic commissions, like my award-winning project for the Mumbai Metro, the technical approach differs significantly from a private residential mural.
The Process of Painting the City
Public walls face sun, pollution, and heavy foot traffic. I use high-grade exterior emulsions and heavy-duty varnish sealants to ensure the colors hold up against the elements. If you are planning a public art initiative, we start with feasibility—assessing the surface, understanding the daily footfall, and navigating local requirements.
Why Civic Art Matters
Art in public spaces acts as a visual anchor. It changes how people experience their daily commute. Whether it is a metro station, a park wall, or a community center, the goal is to spark curiosity. I love turning transit corridors into spaces that make people stop, look, and smile.
Collaborating for Change
I have worked with government bodies, NGOs, and private organizers to beautify urban landscapes. If you have a wall in Mumbai, Bengaluru, or Hyderabad that needs a soul, let’s jam. I handle the concept design, team coordination, and final execution, ensuring your project is as durable as it is beautiful.
