Raku Pottery Masterclass: The Art of Fire and Chance
Ready to get your hands dirty? This 2-day masterclass covers the intense Japanese firing technique where we pull red-hot pieces straight from a 1000°C kiln.
Before the firing, we build the kiln. Watch as we team up with a master potter to construct a custom kiln specifically for the rapid, high-temperature Raku process.
Day two of our Raku workshop is all about the firing. This video captures the metamorphosis as pieces are fired, revealing the unique, iridescent finish that makes this craft so magical.
A look inside the Raku kiln as it reaches over 1000 degrees Celsius. The pieces glow red-hot, just moments before being removed for the post-firing reduction process.
The beautiful, unpredictable results of Raku firing. These small ceramic birds showcase the classic crackled glaze and metallic sheens created by the rapid cooling and smoking process.
Another stunning creation from our Raku workshop. This small, house-shaped ocarina displays a beautiful patina of greens and blacks, a unique result of the firing process.
The official announcement for our two-day Raku masterclass. This graphic outlines the full process, from hand-building and glazing to the final, dramatic firing.
About Raku Pottery: The Art of Fire & Chance
This isn't your standard pottery class where you aim for perfection. In Raku, we intentionally embrace the cracks and the carbon-trapped effects. You’ll be working alongside a master potter to handle red-hot clay, using tongs to move pieces from the kiln into a reduction chamber. It’s intense, it’s fast, and the results are one-of-a-kind every single time.
We split this workshop over two days because the process demands focus and patience. Day one is all about hand-building and prep. Day two is the high-energy firing event. You’ll learn how to work with specific high-thermal-shock Raku clay and prepare glazes that react violently and beautifully to the kiln’s heat.
Then comes the magic. We fire the kiln to 1000°C in about 90 minutes. When the glaze melts, we pull the pieces out while they’re still glowing and plunge them into sawdust or paper. That’s where the carbon takes hold, creating those signature metallic finishes and deep crackle patterns. It’s chaotic, unpredictable, and deeply satisfying.
Whether you’ve never touched clay before or you’re a seasoned potter looking for a new thrill, this workshop is designed to get you comfortable with the mess. We handle all the safety gear, the heavy machinery, and the instruction. You just bring your curiosity and your hands. Come by our space in Horamavu, Bangalore, and make something real.
