Kurinuki is a slow, meditative dance with clay. Instead of building up, I start with a solid block and carve away the excess to discover the form hiding within.

This video shows the process of making a Kurinuki tumbler. I start with a solid block of clay, hollow out the interior, and then carve and facet the exterior to create a unique, sculptural form.

These two Kurinuki vases were an exploration of the technique. I carved and chiseled the clay to create facades that resemble a cut-down mountain, resulting in unique statement pieces for any space.

This rustic Kurinuki yunomi was crafted in Bali. I textured the outside with a metal scale, applied slips for a cracked effect, and hollowed the inside to create a tea bowl that feels like a piece of rock.

This Kurinuki vase has a more organic, rounded form. I used coils to close the top and experimented with different textures, resulting in a piece that feels both ancient and contemporary.

Another detail shot of the tall Kurinuki vase. The interplay of the raw clay and the white slip highlights the carved textures, creating a dynamic surface that catches the light beautifully.

This round Kurinuki vase features a drippy, thick slip that adds another layer of texture. It’s a piece that invites touch, a small sculpture to hold a few dried stems.

The sharp, faceted edges of this Kurinuki vase create a strong silhouette. The technique allows for so much expression, turning a simple vase into a piece of art.

About Kurinuki: Sculpting from Clay

When I teach or work on a Kurinuki piece, people often ask if it is wasteful to carve away so much clay. It is not. Every shaving and bit of dust I carve off is reclaimed for future use. The beauty of this technique lies in that subtractive process, because you do not push the clay into shape, you reveal what was always meant to be there. It leaves behind sharp, faceted surfaces that no wheel could ever replicate.

Kurinuki is a traditional Japanese hand-building technique that translates to hollowing out. It forces me to slow down. Unlike wheel-throwing where I build up walls, here I start with a solid block of clay and carve the interior and exterior to find the form inside. It feels less like manufacturing and more like archaeological excavation.

My vases and vessels often mimic the landscape, with facades that look like cut mountains or rock formations. I use metal tools to chisel the walls, which creates textured, angular silhouettes. Because the process is physical and subtractive, every single piece is a one-of-a-kind exploration.

I often finish these pieces with slips that crackle or glazes that highlight the sharp edges I have carved. These are not just functional items, they are sculptural objects for your home. Since they are hand-carved, they carry a weight and presence that factory-made ceramics simply lack. If you are looking for something that feels grounded, raw, and full of history, these pieces are for you.
