Pink Verranda: Heritage Bungalow Restaurant Design
Transforming a century-old bungalow into a modern dining destination required a delicate balance between preserving heritage bones and introducing vibrant, contemporary hospitality.
I believe a restaurant should feel like an escape. For this heritage bungalow project, I designed an outdoor seating area with a retractable pergola, lush greenery, and custom banana fiber lights to create a refreshing, tropical ambiance day and night.
The outdoor space at Pink Verranda is anchored by a vibrant, hand-painted floral mural, adding a burst of color and artistry. This area combines comfortable seating with natural elements to feel like a garden oasis in the city.

What was once a simple veranda is now a chic outdoor seating area. I kept the original white textured walls and windows, pairing them with modern woven chairs and fabric pendant lights to create a breezy, tropical feel.
Seeing guests enjoy the spaces I create is the ultimate reward. The combination of natural light, greenery, and comfortable seating makes this outdoor area a perfect spot for a relaxed meal.
The details matter in creating an experience. Here, the texture of the woven chairs, the warmth of the wooden tables, and the soft glow of the lights contribute to the restaurant's inviting character.
This view showcases the layout of the outdoor seating, designed for both intimacy and flow. The hanging fabric lights and surrounding plants make each table feel like a private nook.
From every angle, the goal was to create a sense of tranquility. The pergola structure provides shade while the abundant greenery helps cool the space and create a natural boundary.

The reception area sets the tone for the 'Pink Verranda'. I commissioned a hand-painted flamingo mural as a bold focal point, pairing it with a classic brown leather chesterfield sofa and geometric flooring for a playful yet sophisticated welcome.
About Restaurant Design: Pink Verranda
Adapting a 150-year-old structure meant respecting its original layout while ensuring it functioned as a modern, high-traffic eatery. We introduced retractable pergolas and custom lighting grids to bridge the gap between outdoor veranda atmosphere and indoor comfort, ensuring the heritage shell felt alive, not just preserved.
The Pink Verranda project was a study in balancing the old with the new. When we took on this 150-year-old bungalow, the primary challenge was structural—how to modernize a space without stripping away its historical character. We kept the original staircases and structural bones, choosing to highlight them with Art Deco design elements rather than hiding them behind modern drywall.
For the interiors, we focused on 'olavu', or the emotional connection a diner feels upon entering. This led us to commission hand-painted flamingo murals and select geometric flooring that echoes the building's vintage roots. We replaced solid walls with metal-framed arches to open up the floor plan, allowing light to flow through the dining zones, while ensuring each area—from the reception to the private nooks—maintained a sense of intimacy.
On the technical side, the outdoor veranda required a careful touch. We installed retractable pergolas to manage the shifting weather, allowing the space to transition from a breezy daytime cafe to a cozy evening dinner spot. The lighting scheme utilizes custom-fabricated fabric lights made from banana fiber, providing soft, ambient illumination that complements the lush greenery without overwhelming the architectural features.
Whether you are planning a restaurant renovation or starting from a bare shell, our approach remains the same: we analyze the site's history and potential flow before sketching a single layout. This ensures your commercial space is not only visually striking but also operationally efficient for your staff and comfortable for your guests.
