About The Journey: Belt Exams & Progression
Belt exams at SSKKA are the ultimate test of the 'Three S's'—speed, stamina, and strength. Whether a student is aiming for their first yellow belt or the advanced path toward black, every examination requires them to stand before the panel and demonstrate their mastery of Kihon, Kata, and Kumite. This is the moment where years of repetition in our Sion and Chembur dojos turn into recognized skill.
Our grading system follows the traditional Shito Ryu curriculum, ensuring that every student who wears our belt has truly earned it. We do not rush this process. During these formal exam events, students are evaluated not just on their physical techniques but on their mental focus and ability to remain calm under pressure.
The Examination Process
Every exam day starts with the same discipline we teach in our daily classes. We look for:
- Kihon (Basics): The precision of your punches, blocks, and kicks. We want to see clean, powerful movements that show you have mastered the foundation.
- Kata (Forms): A sequence of moves that tells a story. We test for flow, rhythm, and the 'bunkai' or practical application behind the forms.
- Kumite (Sparring): This is where you prove you can apply your training in a dynamic situation. Safety is our priority, so we maintain strict WAKO standards during all sparring segments.
Why Grading Matters
Grading is about more than earning a new rank. It is a vital check-in for the student. It teaches them how to prepare for a goal, how to deal with the anxiety of performing, and how to accept feedback from senior instructors.
We regularly host these assessments at our various centers, including Hanuman Seva Mandal in Dharavi and OLPS High School in Chembur. We encourage parents to attend these sessions. Seeing your child execute their techniques with confidence is the best proof of the values we instill at SSKKA—respect, perseverance, and the spirit of 'Jinku Kiva Maru' (We win or we die).
Shito Ryu Sports Karate & Kickboxing Association
I am the head coach at SSKKA, and my goal is to guide every student from their first white belt to their black belt. We treat belt exams as a celebration of growth, where the entire family comes together to witness years of training turn into a new rank.
