I bring stories and puppet friends to hospital wards and community spaces to turn quiet waiting rooms into places of genuine connection and laughter.

Sharing a laugh with doctors and nurses at The Child Trust Hospital in Chennai. Puppets have a unique ability to break the ice and bring a moment of lighthearted fun to the stressful healthcare environment.

A jester puppet brings a smile to a nurse's face. My goal in these spaces is simple: to create a bubble of happiness and leave a little sparkle behind for patients and their dedicated caregivers.

A chicken puppet has a conversation with a doctor. These playful interactions help humanize the hospital experience and create positive memories for everyone involved.

Children in a workshop for a marginalized community cover their eyes during a suspenseful part of a story. Storytelling is a universal language that creates shared experiences and emotions.

A proud moment with a young participant after a puppetry workshop. These sessions help children develop self-expression, confidence, and stronger communication skills.

About this collection

When I visit hospitals like The Child Trust, my puppets are not just props. They become icebreakers, helping me interact with doctors, nurses, and children in a way that feels natural. By using improvisation to tailor each moment to the person in front of me, I can turn a tense, clinical atmosphere into a space for shared relief and human connection.

Hospital and community environments require a sensitive, non-intrusive approach to storytelling. My goal is never to perform 'at' people, but to engage 'with' them. Whether it is a quick skit in a hospital corridor or a structured session for a community center, the puppets act as a bridge. They allow me to talk about difficult emotions, share a quick joke, or simply hold space for someone who needs a distraction.

Why Puppetry Works in Healing Spaces

  • Low-Pressure Interaction: Puppets are less intimidating than a performer making direct eye contact. This is crucial for patients, especially children, who may be feeling vulnerable.
  • Shared Language: Laughter is universal. My characters, like Paprika the chicken, allow for non-verbal communication that transcends age or language barriers.
  • Stress Relief for Caregivers: Healthcare workers often carry a heavy emotional load. A brief moment of play with a puppet can provide a necessary mental reset during a long shift.

How I Work

I keep my setups minimal and mobile so I can move through wards or community halls without causing disruption. My sessions are improvised based on the energy of the room. If a child is tired, we keep it gentle and quiet. If the room is vibrant, we bring in more music and dialogue. My only requirement is an open door and a willingness to pause, breathe, and play for a moment.

I'm Shreedevi Sunil. I believe a simple, playful interaction with a puppet can shift the energy of an entire room. My puppets and I are here to bring a bit of warmth to places that need it most.
