Behind the Music: A Glimpse into Live Gig Preparation
Ever wonder what happens before the music starts? The real energy begins long before the first chord is struck. Here is a look at the preparation that goes into every show.
The moment before the show begins. A quick photo at the venue before I get ready to go on stage and start the gig.
Another shot from the pre-gig moments at a beautiful resort. The anticipation before a performance is always a special feeling.
Posing by the infinity pool at a resort in Igatpuri before a gig. The beautiful locations are one of the best perks of being a traveling musician.
Taking a moment to relax and soak in the sunset before a show. A calm mind helps in delivering a great performance.
Ready for the gig. A final shot before heading to the stage, feeling energized and excited to perform.
Just me and my guitar on a park bench. This is my happy place, where I can just sit and strum my favorite tunes.
A selfie with my guitar, ready for a jamming session. The bandana look is part of my signature style for certain gigs.
Posing with my trusted acoustic guitar. This instrument has been with me through countless performances and is like an extension of me.
"Music isn't what I do, it's who I am." Carrying my guitar on my back, always ready for the next musical adventure.
A pre-show photo at an outdoor restaurant venue. The tables are set, and we're ready to provide the musical entertainment for the evening.
About Behind the Music
The hour before a performance is when the real magic happens. I set up my Fender guitar, check the PA levels, and adjust my setlist based on the room's energy. It is not just about turning up volume; it is about making sure the first song hits just right for your specific event environment.
People often see just the final performance—the singing, the lights, and the crowd. But the mehfil (gathering) starts long before the guests arrive. Whether I am playing a solo acoustic set in a Nashik living room or a full band performance at an Igatpuri resort, the setup is critical.
I always arrive at least 60 minutes early for a soundcheck. This is not just to see if the mic is working. It is about understanding the room's acoustics. A rooftop venue in Lonavala behaves differently than an indoor hall in Mumbai. I test my electro-acoustic guitar and balance the PA system so that every strum reaches the back of the room without being overwhelming.
For duo sets, my percussionist and I sync our beats during this time. For the full band, we coordinate with the venue equipment to ensure the sound is crisp and the vocals cut through. This is the 'behind the music' process that makes the show flow seamless. Once the gear is dialed in, it is just about catching that vibe, whether it is a chill sundowner or a high-energy Sangeet night.
