African Wildlife Photography: From Savannas to Pelagic Birding
From the golden plains of Kruger to the cold Atlantic swells off Cape Town, these are the wild moments I've captured on my South African expeditions.
A young Zebra foal, full of life, prances across the savanna in South Africa. Its spindly legs and fluffy mane are characteristic of a newborn exploring its world for the first time.
A mother Zebra stands protectively beside her foal in the lush greenery of a South African reserve. This image showcases the strong bond and nurturing instincts found in the wild.
Two Cape Mountain Zebras stand alert in the fynbos vegetation of the Western Cape. This subspecies is distinct from the more common Plains Zebra and is a fantastic sighting for any wildlife enthusiast.
A short clip showcasing the charming antics of the endangered African Penguins at Simon's Town. You can see a large colony on the rocks and a small group heading into the surf.
A glimpse into a pelagic birding trip off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. The video shows the boat, the vast ocean, and captures the excitement of spotting rare seabirds like albatrosses and shearwaters in their element.
About African Adventures
When I'm shooting on a boat off the coast of Cape Town, it's not just about tracking a fast-moving albatross through a long lens. The real challenge is keeping my equipment stable while the swell is hitting us, and anticipating where a bird will dive before it happens. That's the kind of field experience I share during my specialized expedition mentorships, whether we are out on the ocean or trekking in high-altitude terrain.
My African Adventures collection is more than just a travel diary; it is a portfolio of the challenges and rewards of expedition photography. When you are out in the field, especially in unpredictable environments like the open ocean or remote bush reserves, the 'perfect shot' is rarely about luck. It is about understanding the ecosystem, predicting animal behavior, and having the technical skills to adjust your settings in a split second.
The Expedition Approach
Whether we are photographing the Cape Mountain Zebra or documenting the penguin colonies at Boulders Beach, my focus is on capturing the natural story. During my specialized expeditions, I help you move beyond standard portrait shots. We work on:
- Gear Management: Learning how to carry and stabilize equipment efficiently during hikes or on moving water.
- Complex Lighting: Using exposure bracketing for high-contrast scenes, like bright coastal waters or deep jungle shadows.
- Ethical Tracking: Understanding alarm calls and movement patterns to position yourself for the best shot without disturbing the wildlife.
Why Choose an Expedition Shoot
If you have been wanting to step up your wildlife photography, these sessions are designed for real-world application. We review histogram data together after the shoot to refine your technique, ensuring that by the end of our time together, you have more than just a few hero shots—you have the knowledge to capture them on your own. If you are ready to trade the studio for the wild, let's talk about where we can head next.
