African Savannah: Big Cat Photography Tours
Join me in the Masai Mara to capture the drama of the savannah. From vast landscapes to intimate pride moments, I guide you in photographing predators within their natural kingdom.
The Lion King, resting majestically on a grassy knoll against a dramatic sky full of clouds. This wide-angle shot captures the grandeur of the lion and his kingdom in the Masai Mara.
The Topi Plains pride, the largest in the Masai Mara, resting together as the sun sets. This wide-angle shot captures the scale of the pride and the beauty of a savannah evening.
"Hunters on the Prowl." Two lionesses move through the tall grass of the savannah under a vast, cloudy sky, their focus fixed on a potential hunt.
The King of the Topi Plains pride, standing watch near a small waterhole as storm clouds gather.
A wider perspective of the lioness on the prowl, emphasizing the vastness of the grassland she hunts in.
About African Savannah: Predators & Plains
On my Masai Mara expeditions, I don't just chase the action; I teach you how to frame it. Most photographers reach for their longest lens, but I focus on using a wider perspective to tell a stronger story of the animal’s environment. Whether we are tracking a pride resting in the golden hour or watching a lioness on the prowl, we prioritize the environmental context as much as the subject itself.
Beyond the Telephoto Lens
Many photographers visit the Masai Mara with one goal: a tight portrait of a lion. While those are striking, my approach is different. I want to show the 'Kingdom' in the Lion King. By using wide-angle lenses, we include the vast, golden plains and the dramatic, shifting skies of the savannah. This technique adds scale, showing exactly how these apex predators dominate their environment.
What You Will Learn
During our time in the field, we go beyond basic camera settings. We discuss:
- Reading the Jungle: Understanding behavior patterns in the Topi Plains and surrounding areas to predict the action before it happens.
- Light Manipulation: Why 'backlight is the best light' and how to use the harsh savannah sun to create silhouettes or rim-lit masterpieces.
- Composition: Framing subjects to highlight their interactions within the group, such as the social dynamics of the Topi Plains pride.
Logistics and Gear
We prioritize ethical, non-intrusive wildlife photography. I guide small groups to ensure minimal disturbance to the pride. You don't need a massive gear bag to join; we focus on equipment that allows you to be agile in the field. I provide on-site mentorship, helping you adjust your ISO and shutter speed in rapidly changing light conditions, especially during the dramatic Masai Mara sunsets. My goal is for you to return with a portfolio that reflects the raw, wild beauty of the African savannah, rather than just snapshots.
Yashpal Rathore
I used to be an electrical engineer, but the call of the wild was too strong. Now, I spend my time tracking big cats across the Masai Mara, always looking for that perfect, wide-angle environmental shot. My goal is to help you capture stories, not just photos.
