Birding is not just about watching. It is about seeing. From intricate courtship dances to hunting strikes, these moments tell the true story of Delhi NCR’s local wildlife.

A classic courtship ritual of the Pied Kingfisher, where the male presents a fish to the female. If she accepts the offering, they will mate. It's a beautiful behaviour to witness and photograph.

A male Baya Weaver meticulously works on its nest. He builds this intricate structure to impress a potential mate, showcasing one of the most amazing architectural feats in the bird world.

An Oriental Darter with its prize, a wriggling fish speared on its sharp beak. This action shot perfectly captures the "snakebird" in its element, hunting with precision in the water.

A male Indian Peafowl displays its magnificent train of feathers in a courtship dance. This video captures the scale and beauty of one of nature's most famous rituals.

A pair of Black Francolins during a courtship display. The male fans his tail and circles the female, a behaviour that is fascinating to watch and a challenge to photograph as they are often very shy.

An Indian Silverbill carefully selects and carries nesting material. Even the smallest birds put incredible effort into building a safe home for their future young.

An Indian Pond Heron with a freshly caught fish. The focus here was capturing the moment of success, with the bird navigating a man-made obstacle, a barbed-wire fence, to secure its meal.

A Median Egret delicately plucks an insect from the tall grass. While they are known for fishing, their diet is varied, and this shot captures a different aspect of their foraging behaviour.

After some fishing, this Indian Pond Heron has moved on to "frogging". It's a great example of how birds adapt their hunting strategies based on what prey is available.

The Black Francolin pair seen from a different angle, showing the female's more camouflaged plumage compared to the striking male.

About Action & Behaviour: A Story in Every Shot

Capturing these behaviors requires more than a fast shutter speed. It takes patience to understand the environment. When I guide you, we look for tell-tale signs, like specific calls or preening patterns that signal an action is about to happen, rather than just waiting for luck.

Whether it is a Pied Kingfisher presenting a fish to its mate or a Black Francolin fanning its tail in a courtship display, there is always a rhythm to bird life. You just need to be still enough to hear it.

Why Behaviour Matters

Most photographers chase the perfect portrait. While those are beautiful, I prefer capturing the narrative. Seeing an Indian Pond Heron switch from fishing to hunting frogs reveals how adaptable birds are. It teaches us about their survival instincts in the changing landscapes of Delhi NCR.

My Approach in the Field

I always teach the "bird first, photo later" rule. If you rush, the subject flies away. We observe. We wait for them to trust us. This is how we get those intimate shots of Baya Weavers building nests or Darters drying their wings.

What You Learn on My Tours

  • Anticipation: Identifying stress signals so you know when to stop moving.
  • Ethics: Respecting their space, especially during nesting or breeding seasons.
  • Technique: Adjusting shutter speeds for Birds in Flight (BIF) versus stationary behavioral shots.
  • Fieldcraft: Staying hidden in local wetlands like Najafgarh Jheel or the Aravalli scrublands.

It is rarely about having the most expensive gear. It is about understanding the subject, respecting the environment, and being in the right place at the right time. Join me on a walk, and let us see what stories are unfolding in our own backyard.

Hi, I am Sumit. I spend my mornings covered in mud at Najafgarh or Sultanpur, waiting for a single, authentic moment. I believe if you understand the bird, the photo will follow naturally.
