Behind the Lens: Wildlife Photography Field Stories
Photography is not just about the click. It is about the wait, the dirt, and the connection. Get a peek into the field process behind my work.

About Behind the Lens
You see the final focused shot, but rarely the hour spent lying in the grass at Sultanpur waiting for that specific angle. My field photography follows a strict rule of 'bird pehle, photo baad' (bird first, photo later), which means learning to recognize stress signals and picking the right approach before we ever start shooting.
The Real Field Experience
Many think wildlife photography is about having the longest lens. It is actually about the craft of patience. When I am out at the Najafgarh Jheel or the scrublands of the Aravallis, the goal is not just to capture an image but to witness a moment. That means sometimes getting mud in my hair, staying silent for hours, and learning to sit still enough that a Pied Kingfisher or a raptor forgets I am there.
What Happens Before the Click
When you join a session, we focus on the stuff that isn't visible in the final photo:
- Fieldcraft: We practice how to move in a natural habitat without triggering a flight response.
- Reading Behavior: Understanding if a bird is hunting, feeding, or just stressed.
- Light & Composition: Instead of just pointing and shooting, we look for the golden hour, use clean backgrounds for that perfect bokeh, and frame shots with natural elements.
Whether you are a beginner trying to understand manual settings or someone looking to capture behavioral stories, I focus on the practical. We look at the gear you have and make it work for the field, not just in theory. It is about the journey as much as the result.
Sumit Kumar Sum
I'm Sumit. I don't just take photos, I tell stories of the wild. If you catch me, I’m probably lying in the mud at a wetland, waiting for a bird to trust me enough to show its true character.
