Linocut Printmaking Workshops in Mumbai
Forget the screens and digital noise for a few hours. In these workshops, we get back to basics—sketching, carving, and pressing ink to paper to create prints that are entirely your own.
So, what is linocut printmaking? It's a relief printing technique where you carve a design into a linoleum block. We then apply ink to the raised surface and press it onto paper to create a print.
Every print starts with an idea. The first step in my workshop is sketching your design on paper and then transferring it to the lino block. I'll help you think about how your drawing will translate into a carved stamp.
You don't need any fancy equipment for linocut. I provide all the essential tools and materials, including a linoleum block, carving tools, ink, a roller, and paper. It's a simple and inexpensive way to get into printmaking.
If you're curious to get your hands inky, this is your invitation. My linocut printmaking workshop is designed for complete beginners, offering a fun and creative break where you'll learn a new skill and take home your own hand-carved stamp.
About Discover Linocut Printmaking
The magic of linocut isn't in the final print, but in the carving. You'll spend about two hours working with V and U gouges on soft-cut blocks. It feels surprisingly like whittling wood, but much safer and more forgiving. My only advice is to embrace the little slips and nicks in your stamp—that’s exactly what gives a hand-pressed print its character.
What is Linocut Printmaking?
Linocut is a form of relief printing. Imagine taking a design, carving away the parts you don't want to show, and using the raised surface to 'stamp' your image onto paper or fabric. It is a raw, earthy process that rewards patience and a steady hand.
What You Will Learn
In this workshop, we move from a blank block to a finished print. We cover the full cycle:
- Design Transfer: How to sketch ideas that translate well into negative space.
- Safe Carving: Learning how to handle gouges (the tools used to cut the lino) safely and effectively.
- Inking & Pressing: Mastering the brayer (roller) to get an even coat of ink and applying the right pressure to get a crisp, clean print.
Why This Workshop?
Most people come here because they want to slow down. You don't need to be an artist or have a background in design to create something beautiful. I provide all the supplies, including high-quality ink and soft-cut lino blocks that are easy to carve for beginners.
What You Take Home
Beyond the prints you make in class, you take home your master stamp. Because we use durable lino blocks, you can reuse your stamp indefinitely. Many of my students take them home to print on tote bags, visiting cards, or even personalized stationery for friends.
We typically host these sessions at cozy spots in Bandra West, like Method or Jaago Cafe, where you can grab a coffee and settle in.
