Meditative Pebble Weaving Workshops in Mumbai
Slow down and find calm in the chaos. Learn the Japanese art of ishi-tsutsumi, wrapping smooth stones in yarn to create tactile, meaningful art in our cozy workshop settings.
The materials for this project are beautifully simple: a smooth stone, some colorful yarn, a needle, and scissors. This shows that you can create something meaningful with just a few basic elements and a bit of time.
Here you can see the weaving in progress, directly on the surface of the stone. The stone itself becomes the loom, and the process of wrapping and weaving the yarn is a slow, deliberate, and calming activity.
This is the finished woven pebble, held in hand to show its scale and texture. The combination of the hard, smooth stone and the soft, colorful yarn creates a unique tactile object that feels wonderful to hold.
The back of the wrapped pebble reveals the knotting and finishing techniques used to secure the weave. Every part of the object is considered, making the final piece a complete little work of art from all angles.
About Weaving as Meditative Art
You'll be working with a unique blend of textures—smooth river stones paired with vibrant, upcycled saree yarn. It’s not about following a rigid pattern; it’s about feeling the rhythm of the warp and weft against the natural shape of the stone. Whether you're doing it to unwind after a long week or just to make something tactile, this process turns a simple object into a piece of art that’s entirely yours.
The Philosophy of Ishi-tsutsumi
Weaving is often thought of as large-scale textile work, but here, we shrink it down. This practice of pebble wrapping, or ishi-tsutsumi, is rooted in the idea of respecting nature. By weaving yarn around a found stone, you aren't just creating a decor piece; you are honoring the object itself. It’s a meditative act of protection and reverence that forces you to move at a slower pace.
What You Will Actually Do
In these sessions hosted at local cafes like those in Bandra, we remove the pressure of creating a 'perfect' final product. You will:
- Select your stone: Pick a base that speaks to you.
- Choose your palette: Work with a buffet of upcycled saree yarn, cotton, and textured wools.
- Learn the weave: I’ll guide you through warping the stone and mastering simple stitches to secure the yarn.
- Find your rhythm: Spend two hours away from screens, focusing entirely on the repetitive, calming motion of passing the needle.
Why This Format Works
I intentionally keep these workshops small—usually 6 to 10 people. This isn't a lecture; it's a shared table where you can actually ask questions, get help with your tension, or just chat while you work. Whether you're coming with friends or solo, the goal is the same: to leave with a finished piece of art and a quieter mind than when you walked in. No prior art experience is needed, just a bit of curiosity and a willingness to try something new.
