About Painterly Portraits: Modern Heirlooms
I don't believe in rushed shoots or forced smiles. My process begins with a 45-minute consultation to understand your energy, followed by a quiet, meditative session using only natural ambient light. After the shoot, I take a mandatory seven-day disconnection before I even touch the files, allowing me to approach your images with a fresh, artistic eye to craft your modern heirloom.
Why a Painterly Approach?
My portraits are not just photographs; they are intended to be a 'yantra' or a tool for reflection. By mimicking the aesthetic of oil paintings, I aim to create heirlooms that capture your essence rather than just your likeness. I draw heavy inspiration from the portraiture of Raja Ravi Varma, where every brushstroke—or in this case, every edit—is deliberate.
The Technical Philosophy
- No Flash: I strictly use ambient and continuous lighting. Flash creates a distance between the subject and the lens. Ambient light lets you settle into your own skin, keeping the atmosphere organic and intimate.
- The Fuji Advantage: I shoot exclusively with Fuji cameras. Many photographers strive to eliminate digital noise, but I embrace it. The graininess creates a texture that adds character and life, transforming a digital file into something that feels timeless and tactile.
- Mindful Post-Production: I do not believe in instant delivery. By letting the images sit for a week, I remove the immediate emotional bias of the session. When I return to the raw files, I see them as a neutral observer, ensuring the master edits truly reflect the energy we shared during the shoot.
Practical Considerations
- Consultation: We spend time before the shoot to align on intent. Whether it is a traditional sari portrait or a candid family heirloom, knowing your story guides the frame.
- Environment: Whether in a studio or your home, we prioritize a space that feels like yours. We don't need a massive setup, just enough light to see you.
- Final Deliverables: You receive high-resolution, hand-refined portraits ready to be displayed as fine art pieces. These are designed to be printed large, on archival quality paper, to last for generations.
