Celebrating Indian Craftsmanship in Luxury Interiors
We don't just decorate; we tell stories through heritage crafts. From Kashmiri Khatambandh and Pachhikari inlay to traditional Dhokra metalwork, my studio brings these age-old techniques into contemporary luxury homes.
Inlay is an ancient and highly sought-after craft. In this video, I explain the process of inlaying materials like semi-precious stones, mother-of-pearl, and even wood into surfaces like marble to create intricate and beautiful patterns.
I believe luxury is handcrafted. This video discusses Pachhikari, a traditional inlay technique where semi-precious stones are embedded into marble to create stunning patterns, a craft we are reviving for contemporary homes.
Here I am in my studio, showcasing some of our exquisite finishes. This video highlights panels featuring brass and mother-of-pearl inlay, a technique that adds a beautiful sheen and can be used for anything from tabletops to mandir backdrops.
As an art lover, I enjoy nurturing local crafts. This video shows the process of Dhokra art, a metal casting technique I learned at Devrai Art Village, and the beautiful brass sculptures I created.
Kashmiri crafts are the soul of my brand. This graphic illustrates the region's rich cultural heritage, from intricate carpets to woodcarving, which I blend with contemporary design to bring warmth and beauty into modern living.
Woodcarving is a signature craft at Walnut. This image shows intricately carved wooden boxes with floral and paisley designs, a technique we use on furniture, panels, and doors to add artisanal texture.
Khatambandh is a fascinating Kashmiri craft of creating geometric patterns by joining small pieces of wood without nails. We use this technique for ceilings and furniture to create stunning, seamless patterns.
Pinjarakari is a technique of creating intricate lattice patterns from wood. This image shows the complex joinery involved, a craft we use to make beautiful screens and panels.
Sozni craft is a fine and delicate form of hand embroidery from Kashmir. We incorporate this exquisite textile art into our decor and furnishings to add a touch of delicate, handmade luxury.
Handwoven Kashmiri carpets are renowned for their luxurious feel and intricate floral designs. I often use them as floor coverings or even as wall art to create a rich, textural focal point in a room.
About Celebrating Indian Craftsmanship
When we incorporate craft, we never copy-paste. Every piece—whether a brass-inlay coffee table or a hand-carved wooden panel—starts with hand sketches to determine the exact proportions and edge thickness. We work directly with our own factory artisans to ensure that what we draw is exactly what reaches your home.
Indian heritage is not just decor; it is the soul of my design practice. I started Walnut to bridge the gap between ancient techniques and modern aesthetics, bringing the artistry of the hands back into our living rooms.
My studio is a laboratory for these crafts. We take Pachhikari—the intricate embedding of semi-precious stones or mother-of-pearl into marble—and apply it to everything from tabletops to mandir backdrops. It is not just about the final look; it is about the structural integrity. We consider how light reflects off the brass or how the wood grain reacts to a specific finish.
We do not limit ourselves to one region. I have spent time exploring Bidri metalwork in Karnataka, learning the delicate art of silver inlay, and I regularly bring in traditional artisans to ensure the soul of the craft remains intact. Whether it is Khatambandh ceilings from Kashmir or the relief carving techniques we use on solid wood doors and cabinetry, our process is slow, deliberate, and entirely hands-on.
If you are looking to bring a piece of art into your home, know that you are getting more than just furniture. You are getting a story that has traveled from an artisan’s hand to your space. We welcome you to visit our studio in Sector 65, Noida, to see these raw materials, feel the textures, and discuss how we can weave these traditions into your personal narrative.
Walnut by Ritu Kaul
Hi, I’m Ritu Kaul. I believe that luxury is defined by the human touch—the time an artisan spends carving a floral motif or setting inlay by hand. I don’t just design spaces; I curate pieces of heritage that make your home feel grounded, warm, and distinctly yours.
