Sitar Classes: Learning the Guru-Shishya Way
I teach sitar not just as an instrument, but as a path. In these classes, we embrace the traditional Guru-Shishya parampara, focusing on the patience and discipline needed to truly understand the music.
Music knows no age. I am proud of my student Yogesh, a trained classical singer who, despite a busy schedule, shows immense dedication to his sitar lessons. His commitment is a true inspiration and a wonderful example for the next generation.
An overhead view of our group sitar class. It's a joy to see students of different ages and backgrounds sitting together, united by their love for music. These sessions are about learning, sharing, and growing together.
Another angle from our special Bijoya gathering. The informal setting of a home allows for a relaxed and comfortable learning environment, which is very important in the Guru-Shishya tradition.
A special performance for a very special and young audience after our class. It is important to share the joy of music with everyone, especially children, to plant the seeds of appreciation for our classical arts.
The families of my students are an integral part of our musical community. Their support and encouragement create a positive atmosphere that helps the students flourish. Here, a proud parent captures a moment from our session.
A proud moment for any Guru is seeing their students perform on stage. Here are two of my dedicated students, Avaneesh and Hridhaan, during their mesmerizing performance. It is a blessing to guide them on their path.
For Independence Day, my students and I came together to play our national song, Vande Mataram. While we may not have achieved perfect coordination, the spirit and patriotic energy were absolutely right. Jai Hind.
Sadhana is the extra effort you put in to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. Here is my young student Hridhaan practicing an Alankar, a fundamental pattern exercise. This dedication is the foundation of a lifelong musical journey.
A vital part of classical vocal training is learning the dynamics of sangat, or accompaniment. Here, I am conducting a preliminary practice session with vocal students, introducing them to the sitar to help them explore new musical possibilities.
Let music do the rest. I offer sitar classes for all age groups starting from 10 years onwards. It is a beautiful journey that brings immense positivity and peace into one's life.
About My Teaching: The Guru-Shishya Parampara
If you are just starting, we do not jump to songs immediately. We spend our first sessions finding comfort with the instrument—holding the sitar correctly and understanding the swara (notes). This initial foundation is the only way to avoid frustration later, and I guide you through it until it feels natural.
The Tradition of My Teaching
My lessons are grounded in the Rampur Senia Gharana. This is not about shortcuts or quick entertainment; it is about the process. Whether we are meeting in person in Gurgaon or connecting online, the goal remains the same: to help you understand the grammar of music.
What Happens in a Session
We begin with the basics—swaron ka gyaan (knowledge of notes) and sargam. Once you have a grip on the finger placement and posture, we move into the actual raga structure. If you are a beginner, we start with simple compositions. If you are already trained or looking to shift from another instrument, we dive deeper into techniques like Alaap, Jor, Jhaala, and bandishes.
Practical Details
- Class Structure: I offer monthly packages of 4 sessions, which help in maintaining continuity, or single 1-on-1 sessions if you need specific technical corrections or want to try before committing.
- Instrument: Do not worry if you do not own a sitar yet. One of the biggest challenges beginners face is buying an instrument that is poorly made and hard to play. I will personally guide you on selecting a sitar that is actually worth your time.
- Environment: Whether at the Kalaa School of Arts or online, we keep the atmosphere focused and calm. It is a baithak-style learning environment where the focus is on the music and your progress, regardless of whether you are ten or sixty years old.
Music is a lifelong journey. You do not need to be a prodigy to start; you just need to be willing to put in the riyaz.
