Hindustani Classical Music Training: Authentic Guru-Shishya Parampara
Immerse yourself in the disciplined world of Hindustani shastriya sangeet. Whether you seek the meditative calm of Raag Bhairav or the rhythmic precision of Tabla, our school in Koramangala preserves the traditional Guru-Shishya parampara for students of all ages.
We believe performance is the culmination of dedicated sadhana. Here, one of our young students presents a Meera bhajan in Raag Des during a 'baithak', an intimate concert setting where our shishyas get the invaluable experience of singing with live tabla and harmonium accompaniment.
Music is a journey best shared. This is a glimpse into one of our group classes for adults in Bangalore, where students from various backgrounds come together for their riyaz, fostering a community deeply rooted in the shared love for shastriya sangeet.
Geography is no barrier to learning within our Guru-Shishya parampara. We offer structured one-on-one online classes, as seen here with a student practicing a Drut Bandish in Raag Yaman under the direct guidance of his guru, ensuring personalized attention and progress.
We nurture talent from a very young age. This video showcases one of our dedicated young students demonstrating the key components of Raag Patdeep, including the Aaroh, Bandish, and Taan, reflecting her sincere and enthusiastic progress after just one year of learning.
Our music is an offering of devotion. On the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, our students come together to present a heartfelt bhajan, a Ganesh Vandana, embodying the spiritual essence that is central to our musical sadhana.
The magic of a performance is born in the quiet hours of riyaz. This is a behind the scenes look at a practice session, where our senior vocal student and tabla guru fine tune a tarana, demonstrating the synergy and discipline required for atidhrut laya.
A strong foundation in theory is essential for true musical understanding. This infographic explains the fundamental elements of Taal, the rhythmic system of Indian classical music, covering concepts from laya and matra to the structure of an avartan.
About this collection
Our sessions move beyond theory, focusing on the actual practice of vocal and instrumental art forms in a traditional environment. Classes are held in small batches on floor mats in Koramangala, ensuring every student receives direct guidance on pitch, laya, and the nuances of the raga from the guru, rather than just following general group-level instruction.
Our Approach to Hindustani Classical Music
At Sangeet Sadhana, we view music as a sadhana, a lifelong pursuit of depth and discipline. Our training is grounded in the Guru-Shishya parampara, which emphasizes a direct transfer of knowledge from teacher to student. Whether you are learning vocal forms like Khayal and Thumri or mastering instrumental skills in Tabla or Sitar, our methodology remains consistent: disciplined riyaz combined with a deep understanding of the historical and emotional context of each composition.
Learning in Bangalore
Our Koramangala center serves as our primary hub for in-person instruction. We organize students into small, intimate groups to ensure that the guru can monitor each individual's breathing, swara precision, and taans. This setting allows us to maintain the quiet, focused atmosphere required for learning complex forms like Vilambit laya and the subtle improvisations of Drut laya.
Performance as Pedagogy
We believe that true musical understanding is incomplete without performance. Our Baithak series provides a platform for students to perform in an intimate, live concert setting. Accompanied by live tabla and harmonium, these sessions help students apply their theoretical knowledge of taal and laya, transforming their riyaz into a tangible musical experience.
For those unable to attend in-person, we have adapted our traditional methods for remote learning. Our online classes, designed for international time zones, utilize specific techniques to overcome audio latency, ensuring that pitch accuracy remains a priority. We provide digital notations and reference tracks to support your progress, keeping the rigor of the traditional classroom alive in a digital space.
Sangeet Sadhana
We are a close-knit group of teachers and students dedicated to preserving the Hindustani musical heritage. From our founder’s living room to our current school in Koramangala, our path has always been about riyaz and the deep connection between guru and shishya.
