About Special & Rare Performances
The Tabla Tarang is the centerpiece of this collection, a rare setup where I tune multiple drums to match the notes of a specific Raga. It requires a dedicated, controlled acoustic space, as each drum must be positioned and tuned precisely to allow the melody to breathe alongside the rhythmic percussion.
While traditional solo recitals focus on the speed and mathematical precision of the Delhi Gharana, these performances are about expanding the instrument's voice. The Tabla Tarang, as seen in my 'Drums for Peace' performance at Kamani Auditorium, treats the Tabla as a melodic instrument rather than a purely rhythmic one. This requires a specific setup of tuned drums, creating a harmonic bridge between classical vocal music and percussion.
My work in this area also focuses on thematic resonance. The Indo-Bangladesh Friendship concerts were not just musical shows but responses to cultural history. Whether I am playing for an intimate memorial or a larger international festival, the approach remains the same, grounded in the 'Guru-Shishya' tradition.
For hosts looking to book these rare formats, please keep in mind that these sets are highly specific. The tuning of the Tabla Tarang is sensitive to temperature and room acoustics, so a quiet environment and a professional sound setup are non-negotiable for the music to carry correctly. If you are planning a commemorative event or a cultural festival, let us discuss how we can adapt the repertoire to suit the venue and the occasion.
