Fun Agility Foundations for Dogs
Agility isn't just about speed and jumping hurdles. It is the perfect way to build your dog's confidence, burn off excess energy, and strengthen your bond while having a great time outdoors.
This is Pluto's first time on the pause table, a contact obstacle in agility where the dog must stay for five seconds. We use heavy positive reinforcement to teach him that staying on the table is a rewarding experience. This is very similar to how we teach the 'place' command.
Here's Snoopy demonstrating a perfect five-second stay on the pause table. For a dog that loves to run, coming to a complete stop can be challenging, but it's a crucial skill for both agility and general impulse control. Good job, Snoopy.
About this collection
We start with the basics, like the pause table, because teaching your dog to stop and hold focus amidst all the excitement is just as important as the running itself. It’s the same impulse control principle we teach in our 'place' command, so you will see these skills overlap and help your dog become a calm, well-adjusted family member.
Building Confidence Through Play
Many people think agility is strictly for competition dogs, but it is actually one of the most effective ways to mentally stimulate a dog who gets bored easily. At SAGA, we focus on 'Fun Agility,' which means we prioritize the dog's comfort and enjoyment over speed. If your dog is a high-energy breed, this is often the missing piece to help them settle down at home.
Why Start with Foundations?
We don't start with complex obstacle courses. We introduce equipment like tunnels and the pause table slowly. For instance, the pause table requires your dog to come to a complete stop and hold for five seconds while surrounded by environmental distractions. This is challenging for a high-energy dog, but it is a massive win for their impulse control.
Where We Train
All our agility foundations are held at The Run in Yelahanka. This outdoor environment provides real-world distractions—other dogs, people, and outdoor scents—which helps proof your dog's commands in a safe, controlled setting. We limit the number of dogs per session to ensure every pup gets individual attention and positive reinforcement.
Is This Right for Your Dog?
Whether your dog is a young, bouncy pup or a slightly older dog who needs a confidence boost, our sessions are tailored to their pace. We don't force any interactions; we want the dog to choose to engage with the obstacles because it's rewarding, not because they are pushed into it.
