About Outdoor Parties & Public Festivals

I set up my station in a 6x6 feet space, needing just three chairs and a power point for my lighting. I sketch guests in about five minutes each, capturing their expressions on thick cardstock, and hand it over in a protective plastic sleeve right there. It turns a standard party into an interactive performance.

Whether it is a sunny afternoon in a park or a high-energy evening at a resort, live sketching adds a unique rhythm to outdoor gatherings. People love gathering around the easel to watch the process unfold, turning a simple portrait session into a little show for everyone.

My Outdoor Setup

I keep my station compact. I only need a 6x6 feet space, a power point for my clip-on LED lighting—which is essential for evening events—and three banquet chairs. One is for me, one for the guest, and one for the next person in line.

Speed and Flow

My focus is on capturing the likeness and personality quickly. I average about 10 to 12 faces per hour using permanent markers on 200 GSM thick artist cardstock. Since outdoor events can be unpredictable with the crowd, I make sure each sketch is simple, bold, and ready for guests to carry around without smudging. Every single portrait is handed to the guest in a clear plastic sleeve to keep it safe from dust or drinks.

Why it works for festivals and parties

  • Interactive entertainment: It breaks the ice, especially for large public gatherings like Chitra Santhe or corporate outdoor days.
  • A real souvenir: Unlike a photo that stays on a phone, this is a physical memento they can frame.
  • Cultural touch: Whether it is a kid or an elder, I love sketching people from all walks of life, adding that little bit of masthi (fun) to your day.

If your venue is particularly busy, I recommend setting up away from the main crowd flow to give the guest and me some breathing room while we work.

I am Ravi, a caricature artist from Bangalore. I don't just sketch faces; I look for the fun in every person and put it on paper in a few quick strokes. Seeing someone laugh when they see their cartoon is my favorite part of the job.
