A quick heads-up before you plan this: not every baby loves the texture of cake or the unfamiliar studio lights, and that is completely okay. I always observe your baby's comfort level first, skipping the forced smile routine in favor of capturing genuine reactions, whether that involves laughing at the frosting or just being curious about the setup.
Your baby’s first birthday is a milestone that deserves to be frozen in time, but I find the best results come when we keep the pressure low. When booking a cakesmash session at my Sector 58 studio in Gurugram, timing is everything. I generally recommend scheduling this when your baby is between 10 and 11 months old. At this age, they are usually sitting up comfortably but aren't yet zooming around the room, which gives us a better chance at those classic, focused portraits before the cake arrives.
I keep the setup simple and baby-focused, whether you prefer a minimalist vibe or a classic Twinkle Star theme. We start with a few clean portraits before bringing out the cake. This way, we capture two different looks in one session.
A common question I get is: what if my baby cries? My answer is always the same. We take a break. We play. We wait for the giggles to return. A cakesmash session is meant to be a fun exploration, not a task to be completed. If they aren't interested in the cake, we can switch to a fruit smash or simply capture them playing with the props. The goal is to document who your baby is right now, not to chase a specific viral photo trend. Whether you want to include siblings or just focus on the birthday star, my process is all about going at your baby's pace.
