Arangetram Preparation: The Art Behind the Stage
An Arangetram is a full theatrical production. I help you master everything off-stage, from professional makeup and costume styling to rehearsals with your live orchestra, so you can shine when the curtains rise.
To ensure a professional and uniform look, I help organize basic makeup kits for my dancers. This video shows the essential items like pancake, eyeliner, and bindi that are part of a classical dancer's stage makeup.
The camaraderie and fun behind the scenes are a special part of the Arangetram experience. Here are some of my senior students enjoying a lighthearted moment before their group performance.
This video shows the transformation of 9.5-year-old Abhishikta during her photoshoot. She sat patiently for two hours, showing the discipline that dance instills even in my youngest students.
A glimpse of Ridhima getting her professional makeup done in Kerala. The dramatic eye makeup is a key feature of the Bharatanatyam look, helping to accentuate the dancer's expressions on stage.
Even after organizing countless programs, there is always a lot to manage backstage to ensure everything goes smoothly. I am lucky to have senior students who help me keep everything on track.
I feel so blessed to listen to these beautiful artists during an orchestra rehearsal. This is where the music for the Arangetram comes to life, providing the essential energy for the dancer's performance.
Photoshoots are fun, but also a lot of work. Here is Aditri Rawat during her session, practicing poses and expressions to capture the perfect images for her Arangetram announcements and album.
I was so happy to see my student Divya's beautiful Arangetram album. I encourage parents to create these albums as a cherished, tangible memory of this incredible milestone.
Preparing for an Arangetram goes beyond the dance steps. This behind-the-scenes look shows my student Nikita during her photoshoot makeup session, an important part of crafting the complete stage persona for a performer.
A live orchestra is the soul of an Arangetram. We practice extensively with talented musicians so that my students are perfectly in sync with the vocalist, mridangam, and flute, making the performance a truly immersive experience.
About Behind the Stage: Crafting the Complete Performer
The months leading up to your Arangetram involve more than just dance steps. My coaching covers the logistical details like coordinating with your live orchestra, selecting traditional temple jewelry, and finalizing stage-appropriate makeup. I manage these off-stage requirements so you can focus entirely on your performance, stamina, and storytelling.
While the spotlight focuses on the dancer, the Arangetram is a team effort. My training at Samarpana Dance Academy is designed to remove the stress of production so the student can focus on the artistry.
Coordinating the Live Orchestra
The music is the heartbeat of a Bharatanatyam performance. I arrange and conduct full-scale rehearsals with the vocalist, mridangam, and flute players. This ensures the dancer is not just dancing to the music, but breathing with it. We work on the rhythm (Tala) and the subtle cues that allow for a seamless, live experience.
The Complete Aesthetic
Appearance is part of the storytelling. I guide my students through every visual element:
- Costume Selection: We focus on Kanjivaram silks that are elegant and functional, ensuring they look traditional while allowing for full movement.
- Temple Jewelry: From the Vanki to the headgear, I help source pieces that complement the dancer's features.
- Makeup Guidance: The traditional stage look involves specific techniques to accentuate expressions (Abhinaya) under bright auditorium lights. We conduct workshops to practice this, ensuring the student feels comfortable in their 'stage persona.'
Behind-the-Scenes Discipline
I believe in transparency. Behind every beautiful photo is hours of tiring practice. Whether it is the 9-year-old sitting patiently for a two-hour photoshoot or senior students helping manage the backstage chaos during a program, we build resilience alongside technique. This is not about rushing to the stage; it is about building the mental and physical stamina required for a three-hour performance.
