A boat safari on the Chambal River offers a completely different wildlife experience. Here, we focus on the region's unique aquatic and riverine species, including the critically endangered Gharial and the striking Indian Skimmer.

A Mugger Crocodile flashes a "smile" as it rests at the water's edge in the National Chambal Sanctuary. This shot captures the prehistoric look of these powerful reptiles.

An endangered Indian Skimmer in flight against a perfect blue sky. Capturing this bird, with its unique scissor-like bill, is a primary goal for many photographers visiting Chambal.

A Red-crowned Roofed Turtle, a critically endangered species, basks on a rock in the Chambal River. Sightings like this are rare and highlight the conservation importance of the sanctuary.

A Monitor Lizard peeks out from its burrow in the mud banks of the Chambal River. These reptiles are a common but exciting part of the river's ecosystem.

A Mugger Crocodile covered in dried mud basks on a rock, perfectly camouflaged. This shows the texture and ruggedness of the animal's skin.

Another shot of the Indian Skimmer in flight, this time with its wings angled to show the beautiful black and white contrast.

About Chambal River Adventures

When we are on the river, we rely on the silence of the boat and the expertise of local boatmen to get close to the Gharials and Muggers without disturbing them. You will need a 200mm to 500mm telephoto lens to capture the Indian Skimmers in flight from the moving boat, so stabilization is key to getting a sharp shot.

The Chambal River offers a completely different rhythm compared to a standard jungle jeep safari. Here, the challenge is water-level photography. We move slowly along the sandbanks, tracking species that rely on this riverine ecosystem. You will spot the critically endangered Gharial, distinct from the Mugger crocodile, as they bask on the banks. The star for many photographers is the Indian Skimmer, a bird that requires quick shutter speeds and patience as it skims the water with its lower mandible.

This sanctuary in Morena is a critical habitat. My tours focus on positioning the boat to use the golden hour light, which is crucial for highlighting the texture of reptile skin or the contrast of the Skimmer's wings. Because we are on the water, there is nowhere to hide, so we practice strict silence to ensure the wildlife remains calm.

Whether you are focusing on macro details like a Monitor Lizard peeking from a burrow or capturing a wide-angle environmental shot of the river, I guide you through the camera settings to handle the reflection and movement. The Chambal ecosystem is fragile, and the purpose of these trips is to witness these creatures in their natural home while respecting their space. If you are ready to trade the forest for the river, let me know, and we can plan your shoot around the best light and movement patterns of the season.
