I recreate the rich colours, dramatic light, and regal elegance of Raja Ravi Varma’s masterpieces, transforming your portraits into living, painterly art that celebrates Indian culture.

A mother-to-be seated in a setting reminiscent of an 18th-century Indian court. The deep purple Kanjivaram saree, the peacock, and the candlelight create a portrait that feels both timeless and divine.

Here, I've digitally composited my subject into a classical landscape painting, complete with swans and a serene lake, to fully realize the Raja Ravi Varma aesthetic.

A couple portrait celebrating their journey to parenthood in a traditional South Indian style. The rich textures of their attire and the painterly backdrop add a layer of heritage and elegance.

A complete family portrait in the Raja Ravi Varma style. The composition is carefully arranged to reflect classical portraiture, celebrating the family's bond and the anticipation of a new member.

A playful, romantic moment between a couple, set against a mystical forest backdrop. The vibrant red saree stands out, creating a beautiful contrast that highlights the mother-to-be.

In this pose, the mother-to-be holds a single laddoo, a gesture that adds a touch of narrative and tradition to the portrait, reminiscent of offerings in classical art.

The subject is posed reading a book, suggesting a quiet moment of reflection and wisdom. The scene is lit to resemble the soft, directional light seen in many of Varma's paintings.

A full-length portrait of the couple, showcasing the beautiful drape of the saree and the traditional veshti, set against our custom peacock backdrop.

The older daughter joins her parents, holding the pallu of her mother's saree. This pose adds a beautiful dynamic of connection between the generations.

A candid moment of love and affection within the formal setting. The family's interaction brings warmth and life to the classical composition.

About Raja Ravi Varma Inspired Portraits

Getting the 'Ravi Varma' aesthetic isn't just about wearing a saree. It is about the deliberate staging, using traditional brass lamps, and creating that specific directional light that mimics old-school oil paintings. When you book a session, we spend time selecting the right drapes and jewelry to ensure the mood matches the classic heritage vibe you are looking for.

The Art of the Portrait

There is a specific kind of magic in the way Raja Ravi Varma captured the grace of Indian women. That is the soul I try to bring into these sessions. Unlike my outdoor photography, which relies on the chaos of nature, this style is about complete control. We build the scene from the ground up in my Mulund West studio.

What Goes Into the Shoot

  • The Styling: We have a collection of traditional red, purple, and gold border sarees and authentic temple jewelry. This isn't just 'ethnic wear'; it is about capturing that drape and silhouette that looks like it belongs on a canvas.
  • The Props: You will see brass samays (lamps), vintage books, and heavy textured drapes. These are not just background elements; they are tools to guide your posing and build the composition.
  • The Posing: This style requires patience. I guide you into poses that are demure, graceful, and deliberate. We move away from the modern 'candid' look to something that feels slow, thoughtful, and regal.

The Final Touch: Digital Painting

The shoot is only half the work. Once we have the raw images, I spend hours in post-production. I use techniques like dodging and burning, along with custom texture layers, to give the final photograph that distinct 'canvas painting' finish. The goal is not just to have a photo, but to create a piece of heritage art that you can hang on your wall like a portrait from a bygone era.

Whether you are looking for a maternity shoot with a traditional twist or a family portrait that feels deeply rooted in Indian culture, this session is designed to make you look and feel like you have stepped into a masterpiece.
