Bringing Kannada Poetry to Life Through Melody
I believe poetry is my daarideepa, or guiding light. This collection features my musical interpretations of Kannada classics by poets like Kuvempu and Da Ra Bendre, blending traditional Bhavageethe forms with contemporary production.
The poster for my musical offering, 'O Nanna Chetana', a composition based on a poem by Rashtrakavi Ku Vem Pu. This was a special project released on his birth anniversary.
A teaser for my new single celebrating the poetry of Ku Vem Pu. The song features the wonderful violinist Apoorva Krishna, and the video captures the serene, natural feeling of the music.
A clip from my song 'Neeliya Mele', based on a poem by the great Da Ra Bendre. This Bhavageethe composition is a journey into memory and blues, released on all audio platforms.
About Poetry in Melody: A Bhavageethe Collection
When I compose Bhavageethe, the poem dictates the sound. I spend time understanding the rhythm of the original verses before adding any instrumentation. My goal is to ensure the music supports the poet's voice, whether we are using a simple harmonium arrangement or layering in electronic textures to fit the theme.
My approach to Bhavageethe is grounded in respect for the written word. Before I even step into the studio, I spend several sessions mapping the ethos of the lyrics. Whether I am adapting the work of Rashtrakavi Kuvempu or the emotive verses of Da Ra Bendre, the melody must serve the poem, not the other way around.
For a standard original track, the process involves about 16 to 20 studio hours. We start with the primary melody and vocal structure, then build the arrangement. I prefer a mix of traditional and modern elements—think of a folk harmonium arrangement layered with contemporary violin or subtle electronic textures. My goal is to make these ancient verses accessible and resonant for a modern listener without losing the soul of the original writing.
Collaboration is central to this work. I often bring in session musicians like Apoorva Krishna to add texture and depth to the compositions. If you are looking to commission an original anthem or a single production based on poetry or a specific theme, we will begin with consultation sittings to ensure the final master file aligns with your vision. You will receive high-resolution WAV files, ready for event or digital use.
