High-Contrast Shadow Art and Monochrome Portraits
Art isn't just about the light. Sometimes it is about the shadows, the longing, and the stories we keep to ourselves. This is my 'Saudade' collection.
A poignant illustration of a woman crying while embracing a skeleton. This piece is about love that endures beyond loss, capturing the feeling of holding onto someone who is no longer there.
A skeleton figure approaches a woman, a rose held behind his back. This drawing plays with themes of life, death, and romance, telling a story that is both dark and intriguing.
This video contrasts the messy, paint-stained hands of an artist with the clean, sharp lines of the final artwork. It features my darker, more symbolic pieces, including skeleton art and high-contrast figures.
A line drawing of a woman exhaling smoke that forms into a skull. This symbolic piece explores themes of mortality and the transient nature of life, captured in a stark, black-and-white style.
Another view of the skeleton couple drawing, showing the full figures. The contrast between the skeletal form and the modern clothing creates a unique and thought-provoking image.
A clean, high-contrast scan of the skeleton couple artwork. This piece is a popular example of my darker, more romantic illustrations, blending themes of love and mortality.
About The Art of Saudade
For these pieces, I strictly use professional-grade permanent black ink or matte acrylic on heavy 300 GSM mixed media paper. This specific combination ensures the high-contrast look stays sharp without the paper buckling or yellowing over time. Since this style relies entirely on bold, solid black-and-white coverage rather than grey shading, I need high-resolution reference photos to capture the right balance of light and dark.
Saudade is that specific, lingering feeling of missing something that may or may not return. My shadow art series captures this bittersweet ache through stark, monochrome visuals. I move away from the softer, realistic pencil work here to embrace something bolder: solid black lines, silhouettes, and themes that explore life, loss, and the beauty of things left unsaid.
My Process
These pieces aren't just sketched; they are built through layers. Because I use permanent ink or acrylics, the process requires patience. I need 4-6 days to complete an order because the layers must dry completely between applications to ensure the final result is crisp and smudge-free.
What You Get
- Archival Quality: Waterproof ink that ensures the artwork remains vibrant and resistant to moisture.
- Protection: Every piece ships unframed, secured with corner protectors and a waterproof outer layer to reach you in perfect condition.
- Custom Composition: Whether you want to merge two reference photos or capture a specific moment of 'Saudade,' I work with you to finalize the concept before the first stroke of ink hits the page.
If you have a concept that feels a bit dark, abstract, or heavy, this is the style that will make it real.
