From Sketch to Wall: The Creative Process Behind My Murals
My murals are more than just paint on a wall. They’re a journey of stories, sketches, and a lot of heart. Here’s a peek at how I turn blank spaces into something special, one brushstroke at a time. 🎨
Here I am at the beginning of a new project, laying down the first delicate stems of a lotus mural. Every big piece starts with a single, focused line.
The initial blocking stage of the large Cheriyal mural. At this point, it's all about mapping out the composition and placing the main figures on the 60-foot wall.
Work in progress on one of the figures. You can see the pencil outlines and the first layers of color being filled in, slowly bringing the character to life.
Another in-progress shot of the Cheriyal mural, showing the base colors applied before any of the fine details, patterns, or jewelry are added.
The elephant and guard figures are taking shape. This stage involves layering colors to build richness and depth before the final outlining and detailing begins.
The flamingo mural in its early stages. The background leaves and the basic shapes of the flamingos are painted first to establish the overall composition.
Taking a moment during the painting of the Pichwai-inspired Scrabble wall. You can see the initial white base coats for the lotus flowers and buds on the vibrant yellow wall.
About this collection
You might see the finished mural on my wall, but the real process is messy and physical. I start with a simple sketch and mapping, often feeling like it’s a mistake in the first two days—that’s just the raw stage! By day four, the detail work kicks in, and the vision finally comes together. It’s hard, back-aching work, but that’s exactly what ensures every single line has the precision and soul you’re looking for.
How We Start
Everything begins with a conversation about your story. You tell me what you love—maybe it's the tradition of Pichwai art or a modern flamingo theme for your balcony—and I start with sketches. We figure out the layout, the color palette, and how the art interacts with the natural light and architecture of your room.
The Physical Reality
Painting a mural is not like painting on canvas. It requires physical endurance. I’m often up on ladders for hours, managing large-scale compositions like village processions or geometric mandalas. My process involves a deep cleaning and priming of the surface, followed by building the base layers. This is where most people get nervous—it often looks like a 'mistake' at the start! But that’s a normal part of building depth.
Precision & Detail
Once the base is set, I switch to the fine work. This includes traditional techniques like the fine-line detailing in Gond or Cheriyal art, or the intricate geometry of a Sri Chakra mural. I use artist-grade acrylics and apply protective varnishes to ensure the art lasts.
My Promise
I don’t just paint a wall; I create a space. My goal is to make sure that when you walk into that room, you feel the therapy and joy I poured into it. If you're curious about how a specific style—like Cheriyal or Pichwai—would look on your wall, let’s chat. I’m happy to guide you through the process, from the first rough sketch to the final brushstroke.
