Hand-Painted Cheriyal Folk Art Murals
Cheriyal art is all about storytelling. Whether it is a temple procession or a slice of village life, I paint narratives that turn your blank walls into a canvas of vibrant tradition and character.
This wide view shows how the different Cheriyal scenes connect to create a flowing narrative along the corridor of this Andhra-style apartment, transforming it into a village path.
A scene of daily life unfolds on this wall, showing women preparing for the day outside their home, complete with the apartment number integrated into the traditional design.
Another angle of the village scene, highlighting the vibrant blue door and the woman drawing a rangoli, showcasing the storytelling aspect of Cheriyal folk painting.
This part of the mural depicts a traditional 'bhikshe' (alms) scene, with a decorated 'basava' (bull) and musicians, bringing a cultural procession to life.
The centerpiece of the interior wall is this majestic white elephant carrying a deity, part of a temple procession mural that adds a regal touch to the living area.
This section of the procession shows musicians and a guard, with careful attention to their traditional attire and the natural elements like trees and flowers that frame the scene.
The mural wraps around corners seamlessly, continuing the story of the procession. Here, figures are painted to interact with the architecture of the space itself.
About this collection
When I paint a Cheriyal mural, it is never just about filling space—it is about mapping a story that flows with your home’s architecture. I spend time aligning scenes, like a temple procession or a village ritual, so they interact naturally with your doorways and corners. Because every line is hand-painted, I can scale the narrative to fit your specific wall, ensuring the traditional folk motifs look integrated rather than like a generic decal.
Bringing Telangana’s Heritage to Your Home
Cheriyal art is a traditional folk form from Telangana, and I am obsessed with how it breathes life into modern apartments. It uses a very specific, vibrant color palette and distinct motifs to tell stories—mythology, village routines, and cultural rituals.
My Process
When you commission a Cheriyal mural, we start by discussing the narrative. I am an architect, so I look at your wall not just as a canvas, but as a structure. We will plan the layout to ensure the figures and scenes sit perfectly around your existing beams, pillars, and switches.
- Surface Prep: Whether it is a standard wall, onyx, or laminate, I use specialized primers to ensure the paint adheres and stays vibrant for years.
- The Sketch: I map out the flow of the story. You will see how the scenes connect, from the 'bhikshe' (alms) to the temple procession.
- The Detailing: This is where the magic happens. I focus on the intricate jewelry, the expressions, and the flora that frame every scene. It is a slow, methodical process—my back might ache, but the result is a piece of cultural heritage that is uniquely yours.
- Protection: Every mural is finished with a protective top coat, matte or satin depending on your lighting, to keep the colors crisp.
Why Hand-Painted?
Unlike wallpapers, a hand-painted mural has a soul. You see the brushstrokes, the slight variations in line weight, and the deliberate color blending. It turns a boring wall into the focal point of your home.
While I love bringing these traditional stories to life, please note that I specialize in folk figures and stylized narratives. I do not paint realistic human portraits or faces, as my focus is on the storytelling and the rhythm of the art form itself.
Nidhi
I am Nidhi—an architect by degree, but an artist by heart. Painting murals is where I find my flow, especially with traditional Cheriyal folk art. I take your stories and translate them into a vibrant, hand-painted narrative, turning any blank wall into a conversation piece.
