Ultramarathon Training for the Khardung La Challenge
Pushing past 42km requires more than just legs. It takes mental grit, technical pacing, and a tribe that helps you dig deep when the road gets tough.
We have a tradition: after you do something you thought was impossible, you do a "Shoey". This was our celebration after the Khardung La Challenge. I'm a fucking proud coach.
Our crew at the top of Khardung La pass, the highest motorable road in the world. We are not here to conquer mountains, but to conquer our own minds.
The team looks ready and acclimatized. The preparation for a high-altitude ultra like this takes months of dedication and sacrifice.
The stats from a 60km training run. This is the kind of distance you need to cover to prepare your body and mind for an ultramarathon.
A runner who is a dreamer and a doer. He ran his longest run to date, 60km, in the Delhi heat as part of his Khardung La prep. That's what I call motivation.
Another shot of our ultra-runner looking strong. The journey to an ultramarathon finish line is long, but it starts with consistent daily effort.
About this collection
Transitioning from Delhi's heat to high-altitude terrain requires more than just high mileage. I structure your training to include specific acclimatization strategies and back-to-back long runs, ensuring your body and mind are ready for the unique physical demands of an ultra, not just the distance on your watch.
Ultramarathons aren't just longer marathons. The demands on your body—and your brain—are entirely different. When we prep for events like the Khardung La Challenge, we look at the race holistically.
First, we tackle the technical side. You’ll get a training plan that balances volume with intensity, utilizing tools like heart rate monitoring and cadence analysis to keep you efficient. We don’t just run; we train the energy systems required to sustain effort for 10, 12, or even 16 hours. We focus on the specifics—hill repeats to build strength and speedwork to improve VO2 max.
Then, there’s the ‘Ubuntu’ side of things. Preparing for an ultra is a grind, and doing it alone is a recipe for burnout. My crew trains together, which means you’ve got eyes on you during those 30km training runs. We watch each other's form, share fueling strategies, and push through the mental walls together. If your gait starts breaking down or you’re struggling with hydration during a Sunday long run, we fix it on the spot.
Whether you’re aiming for your first 50km or tackling high-altitude terrain, the focus is consistent, smart preparation. We avoid the ‘junk miles’ and focus on quality sessions—track intervals at JLN Stadium, strength work, and the mental rehearsals that make the difference when you’re out on the course. Let’s get you to the start line stronger than you’ve ever been.
Pankaj Dhiman
I’m not here to just hand you a training plan and walk away. We’re going to be in the trenches together—whether that's 3 AM track sessions at JLN Stadium or figuring out your hydration strategy for the next big ultra. You bring the grit, and I'll handle the science and the support.
