About Analogue & Experimental Processes
My experimental work relies on physical processes rather than digital filters. For projects requiring wet plate collodion, I bring specialized portable darkroom equipment to the location to ensure the chemistry is accurate. This requires longer setup times and a slower shooting pace, which results in the specific texture and depth characteristic of traditional analogue photography.
Whether using 35mm film, medium format, or the wet plate collodion process, my goal is to produce images with substance. Digital photography is a tool, but for specific conceptual projects, I prefer the tactile nature of traditional methods.
Motion blur and deliberate shadow play are techniques I use to remove the clinical look of modern high-resolution sensors. These methods require a high level of coordination between the subject and me. We work on the posing and movement before the shutter fires to ensure the result is intentional, not accidental.
I maintain the same production standards in the UK and India. My workflow includes:
- Analog and Digital Hybrid: I shoot on film or digital depending on the mood board and final output requirements.
- Collaborative Setup: Each shoot involves pre-production planning with stylists and makeup artists to ensure the creative direction aligns with the experimental process.
- Controlled Environment: Whether working in a studio or on location, I manage lighting setups specifically for the slower nature of experimental techniques.
This approach is suited for designers and editorial teams who want imagery with a distinct personality rather than generic, high-gloss photographs.
