About Pro Tools & Product Knowledge
If you are struggling with curls that drop or styles that do not look neat, it is usually about the tool or the technique rather than your ability. For example, using a fork comb to open up waves is a game-changer compared to a regular tail comb, as it gives you that neat, salon-finish look without making the waves messy.
Knowing which product does what is what separates a good stylist from a great one. At the academy, I teach my students that the foundation of any style starts long before you pick up a pin.
My Must-Have Tools
- Hair Dryers: A high-wattage dryer is essential. When you use a professional-grade dryer, you get a smoother finish and less heat damage. It is your foundation.
- Tongs & Crimpers: I often work with Fox Studio tools because the plates are fine, giving you the bounce you need without being overly visible. For curls, a 25mm tong is a versatile choice, but you must ensure you are wrapping the hair flat, not twisting it, to get that shiny, professional result.
- Brushes & Combs: Never underestimate the fork comb. As I mentioned, it is perfect for opening up waves to keep them neat. For blow-dries, your round brush technique determines your volume.
Product Knowledge
- Mousse (The Grip): Products like OSiS+ or Nova Gold are not just for volume; they protect your hair from heat damage and give you the anti-static control needed for intricate work. I apply mousse to the front and back sections differently to ensure the style holds all day.
- Hairspray: The secret to long-lasting curls is using a strong-hold spray and letting the hair cool down in a steel clip. If you just curl and let go, the weight of the hair will pull it down.
- Root Touch-ups: For temporary coverage, sprays like L'Oréal Magic Retouch are handy for clients, but remember to teach them that these are temporary fixes that wash out with the next shampoo.
In my masterclasses, I do not just tell you what to buy. I show you how to use these tools on mannequin heads, so you can practice your hold and angles until they become second nature.
