Expert Dog Health, Dental Care & Grooming Tips
A well-behaved dog is a healthy dog. I believe in a proactive, holistic approach to pet care, and here I share the exact routines I use to keep my pack healthy and happy.
This is Pantu's dental care routine. Keeping a senior dog's teeth clean is crucial for their overall health, and this is the start of a series showing you exactly what I use.
Daily brushing is the most effective way to prevent plaque buildup. Here I am brushing my dog Pantu's teeth, making it a calm and routine part of our day.
Consistency is key. Even if it's just for a minute or two, daily brushing makes a huge difference in your dog's dental health and gets them used to the process.
I've tried many types of toothbrushes, but I've found that a simple human baby toothbrush works best for us. It has soft bristles and a small head, perfect for getting into a dog's mouth.
This is a professional pet toothpaste I ordered from the US. Finding a flavor your dog likes, such as this chicken flavored one, can make the brushing experience more pleasant for them.
I also use this enzymatic toothpaste available in India. I alternate between different products to see what works best and to keep things interesting for Pantu.
Pantu relaxing while I get her toothpaste ready. Creating a calm environment is just as important as the brushing itself.
Getting ready for our daily dental routine. I always make sure I have everything I need before I start so the process is quick and smooth.
For an extra boost to her dental hygiene, I add this 'Ta Ta Tartar' solution to Pantu's drinking water. It's an easy way to help freshen her breath and fight tartar.
Explaining the benefits of using a water additive for dental care. It's a great supplement to daily brushing, especially for dogs who are fussy about having their teeth cleaned.
About Expert Tips: Health, Grooming & Nutrition
Forget fancy, expensive pet-specific tools if they don't actually work for your dog. I’ve found that a simple, soft-bristled human baby toothbrush is often the best choice for my dog Pantu, especially when combined with a chicken-flavored enzymatic toothpaste that she enjoys. It transforms daily brushing from a stressful event into a quick, bonding ritual that actually gets the job done.
Building a Dental Routine
Dental health is the foundation of your dog's overall longevity. Periodontal disease starts with plaque, and if left unchecked, bacteria can spread into the bloodstream, potentially impacting cardiac and renal health. Here is my approach:
- Daily Brushing: This is non-negotiable. I use a soft-headed baby toothbrush because it fits better in a dog's mouth. Don't worry about perfect technique immediately; focus on getting them comfortable with the sensation first.
- Enzymatic Toothpaste: Use a toothpaste designed for dogs. I alternate between a few brands to see what works best. The flavor matters because it acts as positive reinforcement.
- Water Additives: For dogs that are particularly fussy about brushing, products like 'Ta Ta Tartar' solutions added to drinking water can help fight plaque buildup between cleanings.
- Professional Scaling: Sometimes, home care isn't enough. Don't be afraid to take your dog to a professional for scaling and polishing if you see heavy tartar buildup. It is a preventative procedure, not a luxury.
Parasite Prevention
Fleas and ticks are a constant concern in our environment. I don't wait for an infestation to act. I use spot-on treatments like Fiprofort Plus.
- The Application: Always part the hair on the nape of the neck or between the shoulder blades. This is a crucial 'no-lick zone.'
- Frequency: Tailor this to your dog's environment. Because Pantu has a short coat and we manage her exposure, I use spot-ons occasionally, but you should check with your vet for a schedule that suits your dog's lifestyle and city climate.
