Wetland Wonders of Navi Mumbai: Bird Photography
From the graceful flamingos to the swift sandpipers, these wetlands are my favourite place to chase light. Join me as I capture the vibrant wildlife living right here in Mumbai’s backyard.
In a huge flock, I focused my lens to find this perfect moment where two flamingos formed a heart shape with their necks. It’s like they were the stars of the show, standing out in the beautiful chaos.
This shot is a great example of how flamingos get their color. This juvenile is still mostly grey but is developing its signature pink hue under its wings from its diet of algae and crustaceans.
This flamingo looked like a professional model, crossing its legs and tucking its beak while grooming. Even a simple, everyday behavior can look incredibly graceful through the camera lens.
I love capturing the quirky personalities of birds. This flamingo seemed to be hiding from my camera, giving me a shy pose that was just too cute not to photograph.
A calm morning in the wetlands resulted in this beautiful shot of two Black-winged Stilts. Their long pink legs and the perfect reflection in the water create a sense of peace and symmetry.
Look at those legs! A Black-winged Stilt takes a confident stride through the water, its reflection following perfectly. These birds make walking on stilts look easy.
This is a super close-up of a Pond Heron with its tiny catch. You can see the intense focus in its eye and the precision of its sharp beak, a perfect tool for hunting in the shallows.
Another successful hunt for the Pond Heron! I caught this one wading through the mud, a small fish secured in its beak. It shows the gritty, determined side of these wetland birds.
This photo always makes me laugh. These two Painted Storks look like siblings trying to sneak in late without getting caught. It’s a fun, candid moment that shows their playful side.
A pair of Painted Storks foraging for food together. One stands guard while the other dips its beak into the water, showcasing their cooperative nature in the rich wetland habitat.
About Wetland Wonders of Navi Mumbai
I use a long 200-600mm lens for these wetland shoots, which lets me get sharp, detailed shots without getting too close and disturbing the birds. Since these sessions are strictly during the golden hours—early sunrise or late afternoon—the natural lighting is perfect for capturing the iridescence on feathers and the fine textures of the water ripples.
The wetlands of Navi Mumbai are a massive playground for any bird lover, but they require a lot of patience. When you head out with me, don't expect to just walk up to the birds. We spend hours waiting in the quiet, watching how the Painted Storks forage or how the Flamingos interact with each other. It’s all about respecting their space, which is why I never use call playback.
My sessions are designed to teach you more than just how to press a shutter. We look at bird behavior—like how a Pond Heron hunches before it strikes or the way a Black-winged Stilt navigates the shallow water. I focus on finding the right angle against the soft morning light so we can get those glowing, professional-grade results. Whether you are a beginner trying to get your first sharp shot of a flighty Egret or a more experienced shooter looking for that perfect frame of a raptor, I help you spot the action before it happens.
We typically spend 4 to 5 hours in the field. This gives us enough time to let the birds get comfortable with our presence so we can see their real personalities. I also share tips on how to handle your gear in the humid wetland environment and how to track fast-moving subjects. If you want to capture the chaotic, beautiful life of these wetlands, bring your camera and be ready to get your boots a little muddy.

I’m obsessed with the drama of the wetlands. Whether it’s tracking a Painted Stork or waiting for that perfect flight shot of an Egret, I love capturing the personality of every bird I meet. Let’s head out to the marshes and find some stories together.
