Masters of Disguise: Spotting Camouflaged Birds in the Wild
Finding a bird that does not want to be found is the ultimate thrill. These shots are all about patience, keen eyes, and learning to look past the foliage.
This was taken during a night safari, and it took me a moment to even realize this Nightjar was there. Its feathers mimic the color and pattern of the soil and grass, making it nearly invisible.
The Eurasian Thick-knee's striped and mottled pattern is perfect camouflage for the grassy, leafy ground it calls home. Its large, yellow eye is the only thing that gives it away.
I only realized after taking the photo that there was a baby Thick-knee in the frame! The chick is standing in the foreground, just as well camouflaged as its parent. Nature is amazing!
About Masters of Disguise
Capturing a Nightjar or a Thick-knee isn't about rushing. It's about spending hours in their habitat, learning to read the forest floor, and holding your breath until the shutter clicks. Often, I don't even know what I've caught until I'm back home, zooming in on the raw files to find a chick I missed while in the field.
Why bother with birds that blend in? Because when you finally spot one, that moment of connection is pure magic. This collection celebrates the masters of camouflage—birds like the Nightjar and the Eurasian Thick-knee that use their natural patterns to vanish into the environment.
Photography in this category requires a different mindset than shooting a vibrant Kingfisher. You aren't looking for motion; you are looking for stillness. I rely on my Sony Alpha with a 200-600mm lens to pick out these details from a distance, ensuring I stay far enough away to keep the birds comfortable. Whether we are trekking through the Thane Creek wetlands or deep in a forest trail, the goal is always the same: ethical, patient observation.
If you are looking to improve your wildlife photography skills, the best way to learn is by doing. I offer sessions where we focus on breaking that camouflage barrier—training your eye to see the movement in the stillness and your camera to capture it before the bird decides to fly.
