Behind the Scenes: My Mehendi Process
Ever wonder how intricate mehendi comes to life? Here is a peek into my process, from the first sketch to the final fill 🌸!
This video shows a close-up of me doing cutwork filling. I first outline the pattern and then carefully fill around it, which makes the design pop with a 3D effect once the paste is removed.
A satisfying video of me filling in the details on a bridal foot design. You can see the fine-tipped cone work required to create the delicate floral patterns on the toes.
This video shows the process of creating intricate jaal (net) patterns. I first draw the grid and then add small details inside each diamond, which requires a very steady hand.
This is part of a step-by-step series showing a bridal foot design in progress. Here you can see the henna paste is still fresh on one foot, while the other is complete.
The very first step. This is how a complex bridal foot design begins, with just a simple ankle band to set the foundation for the entire piece.
The second step in the process. After the ankle band, I added the next layer of detail, including the jhumka motifs and the floral cuff.
The third step. Here, I've added another band of detail and started to use the dark-fill technique to create contrast in the design.
About Behind the Scenes: My Process
My process starts with a light outline to set the foundation before I dive into the detailed cutwork and filling. That way, when the henna paste is washed off, the negative space creates a beautiful contrast that makes the design pop. I find that building the design in layers rather than rushing into the details helps keep the lines sharp and consistent.
Creating a design is not just about the final look; it is about the journey. My process usually begins with establishing the main boundaries, like an ankle band or wrist cuff. This provides a clear path for the rest of the mehendi art.
I focus heavily on techniques like jaal (net) work and cutwork to add depth to my patterns. For the jaal work, I start by drawing a precise grid and then systematically adding small details inside each diamond. It requires a steady hand, but it creates that classic traditional look my brides love.
I also prioritize the quality of my organic henna paste, which I mix at home using Sojaat powder and essential oils. This mixture needs to be the right consistency to flow smoothly through the cone, especially for fine-line work. Whether I am drawing floral vines or intricate jhumkas, I always take my time to ensure every stroke is intentional. This careful approach ensures the stain develops deeply and evenly, giving you that rich colour you want for your wedding day.
