Raptors: Hunters of the Sky
From the swift strike of a falcon to the intense gaze of a serpent eagle, these birds command the sky. Join me on the field to learn how to track, anticipate, and capture the raw power of India's birds of prey.
The Peregrine Falcon, the fastest animal on the planet, with its kill. Capturing this raw moment of predation is a testament to being in the right place at the right time.
A Crested Serpent Eagle with its python kill. This is a rare and dramatic sight, showcasing the eagle's power and its role as a predator in the jungle ecosystem.
A Crested Serpent Eagle stares directly into the lens. Its piercing yellow eyes and confident posture make for a compelling and powerful bird of prey portrait.
A Common Kestrel with a Striped Keelback snake. This action shot captures the successful conclusion of a hunt, a key moment in the life of a raptor.
A Brahminy Kite, a beautiful coastal raptor, stands on a perch with a fish. This highlights the diverse habitats we explore, from jungles to wetlands.
A White-eyed Buzzard perched in a thorny tree. Its striking white eyes give it a unique and intense expression.
The same White-eyed Buzzard on the ground, offering a different perspective and a chance to capture its full posture.
About this collection
Raptor photography is rarely about luck. It is about understanding the wind, the bird's hunting patterns, and having the patience to wait for that one moment when they stoop or hover. Whether we are chasing a Peregrine Falcon in open fields or waiting for a Serpent Eagle in the dense canopy, I teach you how to predict the action before it happens so you do not miss the shot.
Mastering Raptor Photography
Birds of prey are the ultimate challenge for any wildlife photographer. They are fast, unpredictable, and often elusive. On my guided tours, we move beyond simple identification. We focus on fieldcraft: learning how to read the landscape, identifying the perches these birds prefer, and understanding the behavioral cues that precede a dive or flight.
The Technical Side
When you are out in the field with me, we practice adjusting your camera settings on the fly. Capturing a Black-shouldered Kite mid-hover requires a deep understanding of the exposure triangle. We focus on:
- Shutter Speed: Freezing motion without sacrificing light.
- Predictive Focusing: Locking onto the subject before the action starts.
- Habitat Integration: Shooting the bird within its environment, not just as a portrait.
Where We Find Them
My tours take us across diverse Indian landscapes. We might be in the open, thorny scrubs of Karnataka searching for Buzzards, or deep in the tiger reserves of central India where Legge's Hawk Eagles watch from the canopy. Each location requires a different approach to tracking and stealth.
If you want to sharpen your birding portfolio, bring your longest lens and a lot of patience. We will spend our mornings and evenings in the field, analyzing the light and waiting for the moment when nature shows us its true power.
