Behind the Scenes: My Personal Art & Process

byMadhuri UmashankarWorkshops & Retreats across BengaluruView full gallery

Here is a peek into my sketchbook, the experiments on my desk, and the quiet moments where art becomes a conversation with myself.

The kind of stillness that is embedded in movement. A quick charcoal sketch exploring how I connect with my quiet.

Grief and alchemy. A personal piece using soft pastels to process emotions and find transformation through art.

Scribbles that help me find my way back to my body. Finding joy in moments of creating without an agenda.

Invited the ocean to my desk today. A simple watercolor painting to bring a sense of calm and vastness into my space.

Experimenting with making and painting a handmade clay diya for Diwali-themed corporate workshops.

Thrilled to be featured as an artist for the Hearth Summit, where I created various interactive art installations.

A little introduction to me and my work. I am a multi-disciplinary artist passionate about sustainability, mindfulness, and sparking creativity in everyone.

About this collection

I often get asked if my art is perfect, but the truth is, my sketchbook is filled with more experiments than masterpieces. Whether it is charcoal sketches to process a difficult day or testing clay densities for a new workshop, this gallery is where I explore the raw, unpolished side of creativity. This is the space where I allow myself to be a beginner again, so you can see how ideas take root before they become the projects we explore together.

My Creative Philosophy

For me, art is not something that stays behind a glass frame. It is tactile, messy, and deeply personal. I have always believed that our conditioning teaches us to fear making mistakes, but in my studio and during my workshops across Bangalore, I try to dismantle that.

Why I Share My Process

This cluster is a look at the 'why' behind the 'what.' When you see a finished mural or a fluid art piece, you are seeing the result of hours of playing with materials—coffee grounds, discarded cassette tapes, and red wine.

  • Grief and Alchemy: Some of my work, like my pastel portraits, is how I process emotions. I find that turning difficult feelings into something visual is the most effective way to let them go.
  • Sustainable Roots: You will see a lot of upcycling here. I believe we have enough waste in the world, and there is a unique kind of joy in transforming a piece of 'trash' into a conversation starter.
  • Art for Wellbeing: My sessions are never about technical perfection. They are about the meditative practice of doing. Whether you are pouring acrylics or sketching a diya, the goal is to get out of your head and into the physical act of making something.

If you find yourself drawn to any of these experiments, it is likely because you are looking for a way to reconnect with your own creativity. That is exactly what I do—provide the space, the materials, and the permission to make a mess.
